[edit] thank spam

Thank you for voting in my RfA, which passed with 194 supporting, 9 opposing, and 4 neutral.

Your kindness and constructive criticism is very much appreciated. I look forward to using the tools you have granted me to aid the project. I would like to give special thanks to Tim Vickers, Anthony and Acalamari for their nominations.

Thank you again, VanTucky

[edit] RfB comment

Responded there, but yes, it was a poor way to make my point to MBisanz that I do not think crats should be ArbCom light. I make one little mathematical over generalization on an RfB, and EVERYONE has to point out I'm a dumbbell -- Avi (talk) 04:22, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RFA Thanks

Thanks for your support at my recent Request for adminship. I especially appreciated your analysis of my participation in those few "ugly" dramas in which I voiced an opinion, and will strive to be the "calm voice" in the future as well. I hope you find I live up to your expectations. Best, Risker (talk) 13:49, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ...speaking of RfA...

[edit] RfA thanks!

RfA: Many thanks
Many thanks for your participation in my recent request for adminship. I am impressed by the amount of thought that goes into people's contribution to the RfA process, and humbled that so many have chosen to trust me with this new responsibility. I step into this new role cautiously, but will do my very best to live up to your kind words and expectations, and to further the project of the encyclopedia. Again, thank you. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 05:40, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

New York City Meetup

Next: Sunday June 1st, Columbia University area
Last: 3/16/2008
This box: view  talk  edit

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, elect a board of directors, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).

We'll also review our recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wiki Week bonanza, being planned with Columbia University students for September or October.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

Also, check out our regional US Wikimedia chapters blog Wiki Northeast (and we're open to guest posts).

[edit] Not supporting my hypothetical RfA

I wouldn't support it either! :) Especially considering it will never happen. I've never expressed the slightest interest in being an administrator. Even before I became disillusioned with the project, I had made it clear that wasn't one of my aims. So, rest assured, you won't have to oppose me at RfA anytime soon. ;) BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 11:48, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

  • She was part of the reason I vanished in the first place. I watchlisted her empty RfA page, because she seemed like the type who would try for the tools at some point (the fake politeness especially pointed to this). When the light went on for the first RfA, I opposed her, and when it failed, I watchlisted the empty second one, especially given her very odd "closing statement." When it lit up, I opposed again. What's the problem with that? I'm not "embittered", I just consider her one of the least-qualified admin candidates (of those who actually have a chance to pass) that I've ever seen. BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 18:27, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
    • Honestly, Jay, I don't consider it "grudge holding" at all. I think of it as considering her wildly unfit to use the tools responsibly, based upon my past experiences with her. Check the restored history of this account. I don't normally oppose ANY decently-qualified admin candidate. I've been a "no big deal" guy for most of my participation at RfA. GG just happens to be a candidate that I think would be very ill-equipped to wield the tools. BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 18:35, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
    • Oh, and I didn't "quit" because of her, I "vanished" partly because of her. It was mostly because of some RL concerns regarding the fact that I had used my real name as my account name. BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 18:38, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
      • Oh, I didn't mean to give the impression that I was upset with you. I'm not. I was simply perplexed at how you were viewing my oppose, that's all. Thanks for the time you've taken to rationally discuss this, as opposed to others involved at this RfA. BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 18:42, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:17, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks so much - just to make sure, do you want me to remind you on the 1st and 16th (not sure from your note). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:56, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
    • OK, I will check into Reminderbot and if that does not work will remind you myself. Just in case such things are of interest to you, my spam to you (above) was my 20,000th edit. Thanks again, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:33, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for adding the photo. I meant to release both photos, of course. I apologize. I clicked the submit button too quickly. I went back immediately and thought that I had made it all right. Can you fix that or should I start over?

These two hippos don't really 'belong' in Kenya. They were handed over to my friend Iris at Mt. Kenya Wildlife Conservancy by the Kenyan government when they were in very poor health. Now that Iris has restored their health, the government would like them back and she has, so far, successfully avoided doing so. Originally, they were a gift from some other African president.

These are hardly the most unlikely residents at Mt. Kenya. She also has a lot of llamas!

Chuck @ UPDmedia.com (talk) 22:17, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm glad that you appreciate my photos! Here are two more, which I took myself of giraffes. It seems to me that there may ought to be a good place for them to appear at Wikipedia?

I hope to make entries for The Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, William Holden Wildlife Foundation, and the Mt. Kenya Safari Club, but so far have not quite got up the nerve for such an undertaking.

[edit] Well done on Zelda

Congratulations on getting Zelda through FAC - it's a great article. Can you look at the "References" section? I don't think the three web sources appear as they should. I'd fix them myself if I knew how, but I'm useless at that sort of thing. Best wishes. Brianboulton (talk) 00:20, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Just to say that you don't owe me anything - its a pleasure to review well-written articles, and I'm delighted you are considering Tender is the Night—though I hope you won't use quite so many mdashes as FSF. [edit] Chuck, revisited

"roughly ten percent of the things I say are Chuck Klosterman references"... the funny part is that that statement itself sounds like something Chuck himself would say, of course with a different subject.
