[edit] Biography
Depardieu was born in Châteauroux, Indre, the son of Anne Jeanne Josèphe "Éliette" (née Marillier) and René Maxime Lionel Depardieu, who was a metal worker.[1][2]
Gérard Depardieu left school at 13 and was a minor street criminal in his home town of Châteauroux in central France before being discovered as an acting talent by a Parisian producer in the early 1970s. He achieved fame in 1983, playing the doomed hunchbacked farmer in Jean de Florette. More recently, he played Obelix in the two Astérix movies.[3]
He first married Élisabeth (née Guignot), with whom he had two children. Guillaume and Julie. He also has a younger daughter, Roxane, with Karine Silla. He later had an affair with actress Carole Bouquet from 1997 to 2005[4]. Depardieu is the favourite actor and a personal friend of former Cuban president Fidel Castro.[5]
Among Depardieu's notable works is a series of comedy films in which he starred opposite comic actor Pierre Richard - La Chèvre (1981), Les Compères (1983), Les Fugitifs (1986).
Depardieu contributed spoken word vocals on the song "I'll Strangle You" for French producer Hector Zazou's 1992 album Sahara Blue. The album featured lyrics based on the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud.
