[edit] Synopsis
The story revolves around the two main characters, Léo Vrinks (Daniel Auteuil) and Denis Klein (Gérard Depardieu), where the rivalry to catch a well-organized gang of armored-car robbers, pushes Klein to play dirty in order to get the promotion to the seat of chief of police in Paris. Vrinks is a good cop with a tight crew of fellow colleagues that are on the verge of unmasking the robbers, after many months of suirveillance that lead them right to their base. Léo also depends upon tips from shady persons and many times he trusts criminals in order to achieve his goals, on the other side Denis Klein is the figure of an accomplished police officer but with a dirty attitude and questionable ethics. During a police operation to bust the robbers, Léo and his crew are one of the first agents to arrive at the spot, immediately followed by his rival Denis; where he gets drunk, stumbles out of hiding, messes up the whole operation and gets Léo's best friend killed. An internal police inquiry finds Léo guilty and responsible for the death of his friend and the operation that lead to the accident. His wife Camille Vrinks (Valeria Golino) is stranded alone without knowing what to do to help her husband locked in jail. The same guy who tipped Léo of the bust is willing to help her with some money in exchange of her husband's silence so as to protect his identity. At the same time Klein is spying on Camille and, after a brief car chase, Klein purposely slams his car into Camille's and runs her off the road. Both Camille and Léo's former informant die. Klien puts a bullet through Camille's head and claims that Léo's informant shot her in the car, causing them to veer off the road as she had been driving at the time. Léo is emotionally scarred by the events. Many years later, once Léo is out of jail, we can see Klein in the seat of the chief of the police in Paris. Léo asks for help from a friend, an ex prostitute who was raped in the beginning of the story, to get his life on track since he lost everything but his daughter. He tries to get his crew back to understand what happened the day the bust went wrong and the accident that killed his wife, but he finds that some of his friends quit the police or were transferred to other departments because they refused to comply with Klein's dirty methods. Léo plans a keen vendetta against his rival, Klein. Many years have passed and his daughter grew up without a mother or a father and he is eager to see her after seven years spent in jail.
In naming the informant Silien, Marshal is making a conscious tribute to the whole genre of the French "Policier", Silien being a character in the classic film "Le Doulos", played by Jean-Paul Belmondo. (source: 36 Film Notes by Miles Fielder)
