East-West University is a private, non-profit, non-denominational college in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood. The University was founded in 1980. East-West offers two and four year degrees and certificates. The university has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1983.

The university is housed in two buildings connected by a bridge on the third floor. The East Building at 816 S. Michigan was the original home of the university when it opened on September 5, 1980. In 1999, the university acquired The Loftrium Building, also known as the West Building, at 819 S. Wabash Avenue. In 2006, East-West acquired a lot on the southeast corner of 9th Street and Wabash Avenue intended to accommodate classrooms, offices, parking, and student housing.

East-West recorded an enrollment of 1154 students in fall 2007. More than 60% of East-West students are African-American and approximately 15% are Latino, making East-West one of the only majority-minority private four-year colleges in Illinois. The university also has a high percentage of foreign students.

[edit] East-West Perspectives

The East-West Perspectives lecture series has attracted prominent speakers such as architect Jeanne Gang, journalist Salim Muwakkil, investment manager Louis Holland, author and labor lawyer Thomas Geoghegan, former Chicago Tribune columnist Mike Conklin, and Beyond the Beltway host Bruce DuMont. The lectures are free, and held on the third Tuesday of the month in October, November, January, February and March; and the third Wednesday of the month in April and May.

The East-West Phantoms are an independent men's college basketball team coached by Michael Lang. The team currently plays its home games in the gym at Kennedy-King College on Chicago's South Side.
