Malcolm X College is a two-year college of the City Colleges of Chicago located on the west side of Chicago, Illinois, USA, at 1900 W Van Buren St. It was founded as Crane Junior College in 1911 to serve graduates of the nearby Crane High School, and was the first of the City Colleges to be founded; it was renamed in honor of civil rights advocate and orator Malcolm X in 1969.
Malcolm X College is located in Chicago, Illinois at 1900 West Van Buren St. Malcolm X College has been around since 1911. During this time period Herzl Junior College was the first city college in the Chicago City. The name Herzl wouldn’t last long as the college was re named to Crain Junior College. Crain Junior College first opened up its doors to 28 adults who where seeking a higher education. During the depression years it was hard to keep Crain Junior College open. Its existence was threatened by a financially strapped board of education. A big time Chicago lawyer Clarence Darrow argued that the college had to stay open because it was a form of higher education. He stated that the city colleges where there for the people. Clarence won the battle and Crain Junior College stayed open. A Legislative act in the late 1960’s the city’s junior college name would have to be changed to a comprehensive community college. At the communities request in 1968 Crain Junior College was changed to Malcolm X College. Malcolm X College core values follow those of whom the college is named after. These values are Accountability, Communication, Community, Diversity, Integrity, Learning, Quality, Respect, and Service. They also have 8 goals, which pretty much mimic there core values. There are 2 locations for Malcolm X College. The main campus is located at 1900 West Van Buren St Chicago, Illinois. The second one is called West Side Learning Center. This it’s located at 4624 W. Madison Chicago, Illinois.
Malcolm X College is an open admissions college. What this means is that anybody is welcome to attend here. Students that choose to attend here must take district assessment and placement tests. They only way you can avoid taking this is if you are a transfer student or you choose to use your recent ACT scores. You are also admitted if you graduate from an accredited high school, you have you GED, and a transfer student from another college. If you are a new student enrolled in Malcolm X College they have a “New Student Service Center.” This service will provide support to students who are either transfer students, adults with GED’s, or students who are just looking to continue their education. The student service center was created on the Malcolm X mission of supporting a learning and assessment-centered community college.
Financial Aid for Malcolm X College is awarded just like every other college. The Federal Pell grant, Illinois student assistance commission, Veterans Educational Benefits, and the Stafford loan. You can also apply for financial aid through your work if you meet some of the specific qualifications. These are just the few financial aid program offers that they have.
The education aspect of Malcolm X College focuses on adult education and continuing education. They offer a number of different degree choices. They offer associates in applied science, associate in arts, associate in science, associate in general studies. The associate arts degree offers five different majors; these majors include business administration, English, history, psychology, and theater arts. For the associate in science degree there are eight different concentrations that a person can take to get their degree in. The associate in general studies degree offers four different majors. You can major in communication and fine arts, biology, natural and behavioral sciences, and mathematics. Typically the number of credits for you do graduate would be 62 that is the minimum. The associate degree program at Malcolm X prepares people for the bachelor’s degree in what they ever decide to do. Malcolm X does this because at some colleges and universities they will take college work pursued for an A.A.S degree similar toward the majors of concentration.
Malcolm X has both men’s and women’s collegiate sports. Men have basketball and cross-country. The women have just basketball. There is also an intramural for men and women, those sports consist of basketball and weight lifting, and both are for men and women. Malcolm X is on the junior college level, this means you would be playing against other colleges of the same level.
Malcolm X has an on campus library for students to use. They have computers for students to utilize. Malcolm X has a full library staff for students to help them out with their requests. Malcolm X has a full library online for students to utilize when they are away from the campus.
Malcolm X College annually hosts over 1,000 meetings and community events. These meetings and events reach out to over 150,000 different people. Malcolm X and Shule Ya Watoto have a partnership, which allows Malcolm X to host one of the nations only seven-day Kwanzaa celebrations in the country. With this Kwanzaa celebrations Malcolm X also host a number of other events, to support their multi-cultural student body. With Malcolm X having all these activities it has created the college into a high quality institution with exemplary programs and services. All these programs have created an enhancement to the community and the citizens in Chicago. With everything that Malcolm X College is doing, it is turning Malcolm X College into a icon in the city of Chicago.
