Cox Sports Television (CST) is a regional sports network that serves the United States Gulf South region. It launched in October 2002 and is owned by Cox Communications.
The creation of the network played a key role in the relocation of the New Orleans Hornets from Charlotte, NC. New Orleans area viewers at the time were limited to receiving FSN Southwest, and coverage of Louisiana sporting events was terribly limited. FSN Southwest still broadcasts into the New Orleans market five years after the CST launch, leaving viewers now with a unique choice to choose between two regional sports networks.
The network is the exclusive local television home of the New Orleans Hornets of the National Basketball Association, the New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League, the New Orleans Zephyrs of the AAA Pacific Coast League, and also broadcasts preseason games of the National Football League's New Orleans Saints. Local college sports on the network are Louisiana State University men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, and rebroadcasts of football games on a tape-delayed basis, as well as coverage of the Southern University Jaguars, New Orleans Privateers, Southeastern Louisiana University Lions, Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns, and other regional college teams. The LHSAA has a contract to broadcast championship events in football, boys' and girls' basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball, as well as an additional 14 football games on a weekly basis.
Also broadcasted on CST are ESPN Plus out of market college football and basketball games, CFL football, coaches' shows for the above-mentioned teams, outdoors programming, ESPNEWS, and other random events, as well as "CST Tonight", an hour long highlights/news show.
Throughout the year, Cox Sports Television has attempted to reach deals with Charter Communications and DirecTV to broadcast the station. Charter and DirecTV are the most subscribed cable or satellite providers on the Northshore of Lake Pontartrain, who was blacked out the entire Hornets season. A temporary deal with Charter was made to broadcast three Hornets games before the All-Star break, but no permanent deal has been reached. CST has reached a deal with Dish Network and is currently airing on Dish Network channel 421. A deal has yet to be reached with DirecTV.
