In the 2007 edition Colombia was one of the favorites to win the tournament as reigning Champions but failed to qualify after finishing 1st in their Group that featured Argentina. The main problem was that the team didn't play as a team and most the time it looks like Juan Pablo Pino+10 other players.

This is seen as a new golden generation of players for Colombia. Many of the players from 2005 are already in Europe or are preforming well in teams in the Americas. This is the team that won the South American Youth Championship in 2005 that was held in Colombia, and then later lost in the quarterfinals against eventual winners Argentina at the World Cup 2-1 by a late goal by Leon Messi
