[edit] History

When approximately 2,500 Chilean exiles (including businessmen, professors, and students) arrived in Great Britain, they were met by a small community of Latin people who were already there. Especially in the 1970s right wingers fleeing from the Allende administration and later leftists fleeing the Pinochet regime, the Chilean community has settled well in the country, and the majority are of European (other than Spanish) ancestry. The Chilean population is thought to be around 70,000, but it is hard to tell as many have gone back to Chile, or move fluidly between several places.[2]

[edit] Population

According to the 2001 UK Census, a meer 5,000 Chilean born people were living in the UK, [3] representing just over 8% of the UK's Latin American born community, considering most recent estimates of 700,000 to 1 million ethnically Latin American people in the UK, there are likely to be between 60,000 and 80,000 Chilean Britons.[4]

According to the Chilean census, 95% of the Chilean population is of mixed White European (primarily people of Spanish descent, altough their are significant Italian, Portuguese, Britons, French and German people) and Amerindian origin, whilst 3% are full blooded Amerindians. 70% of the Chilean British community considers itself Catholic, 15% Protestant or evangelical with the majority of others belonging to another Christian group (as only around 5% of the population is non Christian).
