The image uses the shape copied from program xBoard, was created by Arvindn and modified by Klin.

The naming is as follows: chess_xyz44.png where

x is the piece designation in English algebraic notation (k for king, q for queen, r for rook, b for bishop, n for knight, p for pawn)
y is l or d according as the piece is a white (l) piece or a black (d) piece,
z is l or d according as the piece stands on a light square or a dark square.

Additionally:

chess_l44.png and chess_d44.png are empty light and dark squares respectively,
chess_xxl44.png and chess_xxd44.png are empty with X's,
chess_xol44.png and chess_xod44.png are empty squares with black circles.

Pawns for other games:

chess_j0l44.png and chess_j0d44.png are black draughts on a light square or a dark square.
chess_j1l44.png and chess_j1d44.png are white draughts on a light square or a dark square.
chess_D0l44.png and chess_D0d44.png are black double-draughts on a light square or a dark square.
chess_D1l44.png and chess_D1d44.png are white double-draughts on a light square or a dark square.

chess_O0l44.png and chess_O0d44.png are black pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O1l44.png and chess_O1d44.png are white pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O2l44.png and chess_O2d44.png are red pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O3l44.png and chess_O3d44.png are green pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O4l44.png and chess_O4d44.png are blue pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O5l44.png and chess_O5d44.png are cyan pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O6l44.png and chess_O6d44.png are yellow pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O7l44.png and chess_O7d44.png are pink pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O8l44.png and chess_O8d44.png are brown pawns on a light square or a dark square.
chess_O9l44.png and chess_O9d44.png are purple pawns on a light square or a dark square.
