[edit] History

Club Deportivo Tenerife was founded in 1922, but some documents show the existence of Sporting Club Tenerife earlier, in 1912. This may have been the precursor of the current team.

Spain's "La Liga" started in 1928, but CD Tenerife played in regional divisions until they were promoted to old Spanish Segunda División in 1953. CD Tenerife were promoted to La Liga in 1961, but they couldn't prevent the relegation in the 1961/62 season.

Tenerife continued between Segunda División and Tercera División, from 1962 to 1976. In that year, The Segunda División B debuted, and CD Tenerife competed 6 seasons there before rejoining the Second Division.

In 1985, when CD Tenerife were relegated to Segunda División B a second time, Javier Pérez became president of the club. CD Tenerife was promoted this year to Segunda División and, two years later, got to return to La Liga. In 1989, CD Tenerife won a promotion match against Real Betis.

In 1992, with Jorge Valdano as trainer, CD Tenerife beat Real Madrid in the last match of the season, escaping relegation and helping FC Barcelona take the league championship. The next year, CD Tenerife encountered the same situation against Real Madrid, and again, CD Tenerife won the match and FC Barcelona won the league. But this time, CD Tenerife finished in fifth place and qualified to play in the UEFA Cup playoffs the next year. In the 1993/94 UEFA Cup, CD Tenerife lost to Juventus 4-2 on aggregate in the third round prior to the quarterfinals.

In 1995, Jupp Heynckes became the trainer of the club. CD Tenerife again qualified for the UEFA Cup, beating Maccabi Tel Aviv, SS Lazio Roma (5-4 on aggregate, beating Lazio 5-3 in the 2nd leg in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, main town of Tenerife), Feyenoord Rotterdam, Brøndby IF (the winner coming late in extra time from an Antonio Mata free kick). Tenerife were eventually beaten by winners Schalke 04 in the semifinals 2-1 on aggregate.

CD Tenerife then went on a downward spiral which eventually led to relegation to the Segunda División in 1999, prompting various managerial changes within the club. In 2001 they were again promoted, led by Rafael Benitez, who promptly left to take up the manager's job at Valencia CF. Tenerife won promotion to the First Division on the last match of the season thanks to a goal from Hugo Morales.

Pepe Mel became the new trainer but the season in La Liga never really took off, as Tenerife were beaten heavily at home by FC Barcelona 6-0, abd Pepe Mel lost his job. Javier Clemente, the former manager of Spain, took the job and made a good effort of saving the season but it was too late and CD Tenerife were again relegated to the Segunda Division.

CD Tenerife has been in many troubles due to the enormous debt, more than 40 million. Javier Perez was replaced with Víctor Perez de Ascanio, who resigned due to his bad management. The current president, Miguel Concepción, has been negotiating with politicians and businessmen, and created a construction company as a subsidiary of CD Tenerife.

Fans of CD Tenerife are called "Chicharreros" because of the inhabitants of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Many years ago, this little fishing village (now the capital of Tenerife) ate a lot of "chicharros" (a little fish). Other inhabitants of Tenerife and Canary Islands used "Chicharreros" as a pejorative name, but finally the inhabitants of Santa Cruz accepted "Chicharrero" as an affectionate name.
