I think a section on "Celtics mystique," tradition, etc., should be added. I'm a die-hard Celtics fan, so if people think this is a good idea, I could help contribute.

I think more should be made of not winning the Tim Duncan sweepstakes 1997 Draft. That, along with Len Bias and Reggie Lewis' untimely deaths has been a major reason why the Celtics have been horrible in the Post-Bird era.
[edit] Name Origins and pronunciation
Where did the Boston Celtics get their name from? I don't mean about the actual Celts or anything like that, but how did this basketball team get their name?
- My predecessor on this page, I imagine it's at least partly related to the Irish population in Boston.
How is their name pronounced? Irish people and Welsh people tend to produce the adjective as /kɛltɪk/, because they perceive that the word isn't a Latin word, and thus shouldn't be subject to the /k/ -> /s/ mapping of the Romance languages. While the Scottish football club was named in a moment of Victorian Romance-Latin-worship, and is called /sɛltɪk/.
The name came from owner Walter Brown, apparently the name had roots in an original Celtics team in New York and was chosen due to the large Irish population in Boston. The name is pronounced the same as the Scottish football club.

[edit] Recent Drafts/Young Talent
I agree that Ainge has drafted well recently, but do you really think that Marcus Banks, who has been relegated to third-string PG, is a good example of a "successful draft pick?"

[edit] Dance Team/Auerbach controversy
Does anybody want to start a little paragraph about how the team will have a dance team for 06-07 and how Red was staunchly opposed to that and is still very involved in preserving traditional elements of the franchise? I know that I've heard quotes like "they'll have a dance team over my dead body!" being attributed to Red.

Why do we have guys like John Bagley, Ed Pickney and Marcus Banks there? What is there not to forget? They didn't contribute on the court and were not fan favorites. Wouldn't it make more sense to have guys like Jerry Sichting, Scott Wedman who were an essential part of a championship team there?

I merged the relevant information (the Telfair trade) into the 2003-present section of the article. The minor trades and picks are non-notable to the Boston Celtics article. Less than 70% of second round draft picks in 2005 played a single minute for an NBA team during the '05-'06 season. [edit] Rebuilding a contender (2001-present)
Does anyone actually think this is an appropriate header? Pretty presumptuous and optimistic, no? Every single word with the exception of "a" is very debatable...how long has this rebuilding process been going on? One could argue that they've been rebuilding for almost a decade...or for only two seasons. One could argue that they're not rebuilding, but floating around in a non-competitive malaise. I think you can only call it "rebuilding" if there is progress - either in terms of results (more wins) or following a rebuilding plan (get rid of high salaries and draft/trade for youth; drop the headcases; focus on offense versus defense; pick a new star to build around, etc...there are a lot of ways to do it). Perhaps for this past season or two it could be said that they are following some sort of plan (dubiously derailed by injuries), but I can't see it prior to that. How about calling it "The Doc Rivers Era," or "The Wyc Grousbeck Era" or something like that. I would prefer the former, since they are inexplicably extending Doc's contract for another year. "While the team name is pronounced "Sell-ticks," the word "Celtic" is pronounced "Kell-tick" in Ireland."
Is there any specific explanation as to why it's normally pronounced wrong? I mean, a lot of people use the pronounciation, but it is still the only place "Celt" or "Celtic" is pronounced beginning with an S-sound. --Ifrit 21:39, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

I have no idea how you guys missed this but Paul Pierce's college was Kansas. I'd fix it myself but I'm not established enough to add it in.
In the Pitino Years section, I question the validity of this sentence. Pierce would go on to become the best player ever to grace an NBA court with his presence. Yasgur 15:36, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

It has been reported by Doc Rivers that Tony Allen is going to play the backup point guard position this year, but somebody changed the depth chart and placed Tony at SG again. In any case, Brian Scalabrine is still ahead of Leon Powe in the depth chart, but that can change during the season, or even pre-season. But right now, Powe is the 3rd string PF, House the 2nd string SG and Tony Allen the 2nd string PG. And that should be kept the same way in the Celtics article until the playing time of the players in the next games suggests otherwise. (8-Hype 12:17, 8 October 2007 (UTC))

- I have to agree. I think the excitement that the current season is providing is flooding the page with too much minutiae. Esteban Batista? Dahntay Jones?. Neither even played a regular season game. I've grown up in the Boston area my whole life and thats the first I've heard of it. I don't go to enough many Celts games to claim to be an expert, but I think this is just a rumor.
