"Beautiful Liar" is a song recorded by American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles and Colombian Latin pop singer Shakira. The song was written by Knowles, Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench, and Stargate members Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen and produced by Stargate and Knowles for the re-release of her second solo album, B'Day. A Spanish and English mixed version of the song was produced called "Bello Embustero".
The song was the first single released from the deluxe edition. It holds the distinction of having the largest upward movement on the Billboard Hot 100, moving ninety-one positions from number ninety-four to number three the week of April 7, 2007.[1]
The track won an MTV Video Music Award in 2007 for the newly-added category of Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration, and the Spanish version of the song was nominated for the 8th Annual Latin Grammy Award in 2007 for Record of the Year,[2] but lost to Juan Luis Guerra's La Llave de mi Corazón. It was also nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. The previous year, Shakira was nominated for this award with "Hips Don't Lie" featuring Wyclef Jean. In 2008 the song was awarded with the Ivor Novello Award for Best-selling British Song.

[edit] Background
The duet had been confirmed by Beyoncé in an interview with Univision in December 2006.[3] In an MTV interview, she described how she had met Shakira several times at various awards shows over the recent years. After recording the Latin-themed song solo, Beyoncé approached her to appear on it; Shakira accepted.[4]
Beyoncé has stated that the song is about female empowerment and what it means to be one, in keeping with the theme of the album.[5] The protagonists sing about being charmed by the same man; instead of fighting over him, they decide not to start a drama or waste their time.
The original Spanglish version featured Beyoncé singing solo, and this leaked onto the internet in late 2006. However the duet version was recorded (in English) on January 23, 2007 in Miami by Gustavo Celis. By February 27, 2007 it had leaked onto the Internet. The single started playing on the radio just after the video was premiered on MTV's Total Request Live and BET's 106 and Park on February 28, 2007. It premiered on the same day as Beyoncé's other single, "Upgrade U". The song was made available on iTunes on March 20, 2007. Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Don Omar has recorded verses to be used in a remix of the song,[6] but was never released.
In the UK, the majority of radio stations such as Radio 1[7] played a more up-beat, dance remix of "Beautiful Liar" by the Freemasons, instead of the original mix.
[edit] Music and structure
"Beautiful Liar" is an R&B song written in the key of G minor.[8] It is written in common time and moves at a moderate 96 beats per minute.[8] Knowles' vocal range spans from G3 to B♭4.[9]

[edit] Chart performance
After a short period on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, "Beautiful Liar" debuted at number 94 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In its second week, the song jumped 91 positions to number three, setting a record for the largest upward movement in the history of the Hot 100 chart.[1] It was due to the anticipated digital release the week prior. On the Billboard Pop 100 chart the song also jumped seventy-four places, from number seventy-seven to number three. "Beautiful Liar" also became one of very few songs to debut at number one on both the Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Songs charts.[5] In mid-May the single climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales, the fifth from B'day to do so, where after two weeks it was replaced at No. 1 by Beyonce's former band member Kelly Rowland and her song "Like This" featuring Eve. Digital sales of "Beautiful Liar" stand close to 700,000 copies.
On the international charts, "Beautiful Liar" has performed well. The song became another hit for both Shakira and Beyoncé throughout Europe and Latin America. In the United Kingdom the Freemasons Remix of the song was widely promoted by radio stations including BBC Radio 1, where it was put on the coveted 'A-List'. It made its debut on the UK Singles Chart at number ten, based solely on digital downloads, two weeks before the CD release, making it both Beyoncé's and Shakira's highest debut on the UK Singles Chart on digital downloads alone.[10] On April 22, 2007, the single made to climb from number five to number one becoming the second number one in the territory to Shakira, and third to Beyoncé as a solo artist (fifth, counting her career with Destiny's Child). [11] On June 20, 2007, the single was certified silver in the UK.[12] In addition to this, the song was placed #6 on VH1 UK's 100 Biggest Songs of 2007. Sales-wise, however, the song was 2007's 12th biggest-selling single in the UK.[13] In Latin America, the song debuted at number 32 at the Latin America Top 40, the fourteenth week of 2007,[14] and it has since peaked at number one for two weeks, becoming Beyoncé's biggest hit and first number-one in the region, beating Irreplaceable and Crazy in Love. The single also holds the honor of being the fourth song by an international artist to reach the top. The single peaked at No. 2 in Peru, become Beyoncé biggest hit in that country.[15]
The song is the second most successful single released of B'Day, so far, peaking at number two on the United World Chart for three consecutive weeks.[16] It still charting staying in the chart for tweny-two weeks.[17] It has since been certified 2xPlatinum, and garnered 4,416,000 points. Beautiful Liar peaked at #12 on the year-end charts of the United World Chart.
[edit] Music video
The music video for "Beautiful Liar" was helmed by English director Jake Nava, who directed several other Knowles videos such as "Crazy in Love", "Baby Boy", "Naughty Girl". The video was shot in only two days. The production of the video—especially its choreography—came spontaneously. Beyoncé and Shakira practiced the routines for just forty minutes.[18] Beyoncé was just watching Shakira dancing and learned from it. In an interview, she stated:
I love to dance and perform but it was Shakira who taught me how to belly dance and who created most of the routine for Beautiful Liar. We didn’t have a lot of time to come up with the choreography - most of it was done on the spot. I was just watching her and learning from her. It was so much fun, the best energy. She was really easy to work with.
—Beyoncé Knowles, Expressindia.com[19]
The video begisn with the women's faces masked by smoke. As the video progresses they are featured against several different backgrounds, including: dawn (Beyoncé) and dusk (Shakira); sheets blown in the wind; bamboo covered in yellow orchids; a room with blue neon lighting and Avestan writing on the walls; and finally a background of stormy weather. Slow dance moves and belly dancing are featured heavily throughout the video, with a breakdown after the bridge. The women wear matching hairstyles and black outfits for the entirety of video.
The video premiered on February 28, 2007 (the same day as the video for "Upgrade U") on 106 & Park and on TRL. The next day, the video debuted on TRL's countdown at number six.[20][21] The video has since reached No. 1 seven times and has, as of May 23, 2007, retired from the countdown at number No. 3. In its 40-day-run on the countdown, the video spent 38 days above the No. 6 position where it debuted. "Beautiful Liar" was nominated for Video Of The Year at the 2007 BET Awards but lost to another Beyoncé video, "Irreplaceable". "Beautiful Liar" won the 2007 MTV Video Music Award for Most Earthshattering Collaboration.
