Hi Athinaios. I note that you have replaced the German pronunciation of the name of Brussels in the lead section. In the article itself and in documents I have read, German is not the official language of Brussels. We generally try not to clutter the lead section with too much minor information. I have considered that you might include a statement that there are some (what is it - less than 1%?) German speakers in Belgium, and a few of these may live in Brussels, in the Language section of the article further down. Though that section is already considered questionable. Do you have any figures for the amount of German speakers in Brussels - is the percentage significantly higher than any other non-German city in Europe? If the figure is not significant then even mentioning it in the Language section might be regarded as too trivial. It would be a good idea to get a reference to support mentioning the German language. In the meantime I would like to remove the German pronunciation from the lead section. - I've been looking for information on German speakers in Brussels and I can't find anything to help you. This BBC source [2] does indicate that the German speakers in Belgium are a significant minority and are in the Wallonia region, which doesn't include Brussels. Dear Silk Tork. I am unsure what kind of information you are seeking. Brussels is the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium. That state has three, not two, official languages. To me, it would appear sensible to include the name of the city in all official languages of the country run from it (as is the case, e.g., on French wikipedia). I don't think the number of German-speakers who live in the city or region is relevant here, as opposed to the official status of the language in question in the country in question. - That's fine. But the article is about Brussels. It's not about Belgium. In the same way that London is about London, not the United Kingdom, which has several languages. In addition it is Wiki policy to use IPA, and articles are moving toward that. Check Help:Pronunciation. I find that for articles on places which will have a distinct regional pronunciation that using the regional pronunciation is helpful. However, as the chances of hearing Brussels pronounced in German in Brussels is as likely as hearing Paris, London, or Rome pronounced in German there is a limit to how useful that information actually is. If you feel strongly that the information is useful (as opposed to simply a matter of political stance, for an encyclopedia doesn't follow any political bias) then let us take this to the talkpage and get a wider perspective. - Ok, if that's what you prefer. I don't think I understand your issue. From my point of view, this is not political, nor is it anything to do with pronunciation. The article is about Brussels, which is, amongst other things, the capital of Belgium, and should give the name of that city in all official languages of that country. The German name is not a different pronunciation, but a slightly different name in the same way that, say, Copenhagen is not just a different pronunciation of København. It is the norm for articles on country capitals to give names in all relevant national languages (look at Edinburgh, Helsinki or Berne, also at Leuven and Liège (city)). The London article is unusual in that regard, perhaps because the multi-lingual character of Britain is less strongly felt than that of Belgium? If this needs to go on the Brussels talk page, I'd like to stress it's not because I feel the information is useful (which I do), but because you feel it is necessary to remove ca. 30 characters and a piece of information that has been part of the article since January 2003. athinaios | Talk 19:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Ich bin je richtig begeistert, in welchem Tempo hier die Übersetzungen "meiner" Vasenmalerei- und anderer Artikel zustande bringst. Doppelt erfreulich. zum einen für mein Ego ;) - zum anderen ist es sicher nicht schlecht, wenn dieser Bereich in der en:WP noch etwas ausgebaut wird. Ein paar Infos. Nachdem ich die Artikel zu Antikensammlung und zum Pergamonaltar endlich fertig habe (sollte in diesem monat hoffentlich alles soweit fertig sein), wird mein nächster größerer Schritt der Ausbau des Artikels zum Schuwalow-Maler zum nächsten Schreibwettbewerb in der de:WP (März) sein. In dieser Woche habe ich verstärkt an einer Liste der Vasenmaler und Töpfer gearbeitet, die, sollte es dich interessieren, aber noch nicht übersetzt werden sollte, da sie noch nicht fertig ist. Fertig wird sie zwar eh nie, aber der Grundstock sollte dann fertig erstellt sein. Sollte dich das interessieren (wäre dann aber sicher eine Heidenarbeit) laß' es mich wissen, dann gebe ich dir Bescheid, wenn das einigermaßen soweit ist. Grüße. The task force dedicated to creating and improving articles on all German cities and municipalities is happy to announce that there are now (at least) stub articles for all municipalities of Germany. Now the task force is looking for help in fleshing these out a little bit. The current phase of activity for the task force is to copy in infoboxes from the articles in German Wikipedia. If you want to help, even just for a few articles, look at the instructions and links here
There are now way over 26.000 articles tagged as part of our Wikiproject and many still need either an importance or a quality assessment. Also there are many more out there that do need to be tagged like approx 8000 municipalities. If you would like to help take a browse through Articles needing Importance assessment or Articles needing a basic quality assessment. |
