[edit] Bartonsville, Pennsylvania
Bartonsville, Pennsylvania is a small, unincorporated village in Monroe County. Officially it lies in three townships, namely Pocono, Hamilton and Stroud. One of its major subdivisions, Barton Glen, straddles the border with Jackson Township as well. [edit] HistoryThe village was founded in 1831 by Colonel Joseph Benjamin Barton when he opened up a hotel and post office along the Easton-Belmont Turnpike stagecoach route. Barton settled along this profitable transportation route after running an ice cream parlor in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania for several years. After residing and givng his name to the village, Barton eventually pulled up stakes and travelled further north, eventually founding the borough of Waymart in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. The result of his move is that the old Barton buried in Custard's Cemetery (the principal and one of only two villages in or near the village)is his daughter Lydia Barton, who remained in the village after his departure, but never married. The village could easily have been called Custardsville, since the Custard family settled in the area shortly after Barton, opening a sawmill on the Pocono Creek, and eventually establishing a Lutheran Church (a daughter church of the Hamilton Union Church in Hamilton Square, PA). The Custard family also gave land for a school and a cemetery. At the turn of the 20th century, Bartonsville was the typical, small Mid-Atlantic village, including two one-room school houses (due to the multiple townships in which it is located), a grist mill, a tannery and barkshed, a grand, rambling hotel (Barton's by then called the Forest Inn), a creamery, general store, post office and cobbler. The village also boasted a dance hall, brass band and a baseball team. [edit] TodayToday the village has become one more victim of America's exurban sprawl. Now a three-lane highway (PA route 611) crosses the valley of the Pocono Creek, and much of the historic homes and buildings of the old village are gone. Straddling Route 611 are a number of shopping areas and stripmalls, and an assortment of subdivisions, among them Barton Glen, Tara Hills, Pocono Laurel Lake, Fawn Acres, and Buck Valley. Largley a bedroom community today, retail and hospitality industries make up the lionshare of the village's economic activity. The village's ZIP code is 18321, which according to the US Census [1] had a population of 1,753 in 2000. [edit] SourcesAppel, John C. et al. History of Monroe County, Pennsylvania 1725-1976. [edit] Enrollment to Employment SystemEstablishing one’s career in today’s competitive environment has become an endless pursuit to most job seekers. Employers too are increasingly having a hard time finding the right person for the job. Too often, there remains a huge gap between the skills required by industry and what a graduate has learned from school. STI Education Services Group (STI) steps up to bridge this gap by introducing the world’s very first E2E (Enrollment to Employment) System. The E2E System is a complete approach to human resource development, which aims to develop ICT-enabled professionals through innovative learning and career planning methodologies. It covers every student’s needs from the time he enrolls in STI up to the moment he applies for a job. First, STI prepares the soon-to-be professionals with job market-oriented and highly-advanced curriculum through its unique Learning Systems Development. This standard is recognized by its top international affiliates. To make sure that the courses being offered are carried out well, STI implements the Academic Delivery System. This guarantees highly qualified faculty and state-of-the-art facilities across all STI school networks. To date, STI is the only school in the country offering standard courseware and curriculum that guarantees world-class education in any of the more than 100 STI schools here and abroad. In order to prepare students in seeking the job they are qualified for, STI carries out Quality Assurance. This prepares students for employment through rigid assessment, evaluation, and certification programs. Thus ensuring all STI graduates are equipped with all the knowledge and skills required in the workplace. STI’s responsibility to its graduates goes beyond quality education. Through the Assured Job Placement Assistance Program, STI warrants every graduate employment support with the help of I-CARES and premier international placement agencies like GROW Inc. The Interactive Career Assistance and Recruitment System (I-CARES) is part of STI’s continuing commitment to provide employment opportunities for its graduates. It is an online career service system that provides assistance to STI students and alumni in establishing links with prospective employers. This also helps the school in monitoring the development of its alumni in their respective careers. Global Resource for Outsourced Workers Inc. or GROW Inc. is one of the leading overseas recruitment and staffing agency around the globe. It recruits, selects, and deploys highly skilled professionals in the field of ICT, business, healthcare, and education to meet the staffing needs of companies here and abroad. With the E2E System of STI, you are not just assured of quality education, but you are also guaranteed with career opportunities that are just waiting for you. Race down to world-class ICT-enhanced education and capture your career goals ahead of everyone. [edit] STI FoundationThe STI Foundation was established by the STI Education Services Group to contribute to the improvement of the country's educational system through programs and projects that address the digital divide and promote excellence in education. [edit] The Foundation has four (4) core programs:1. Project ATTRAC or Adaptive Technology Training, Resource and Access Center, an ICT feeder course specifically for visually impaired persons (VIPs) who have at least completed high school, and who may or may not be concurrently employed.
STI Foundation received the 2003 Kabalikat Award from Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for its pioneering efforts and unselfish contribution in the promotion and enhancement of technical vocational education and training (TVET) in the country. Slowly but surely, STI Foundation is on its way to bridging the country's digital divide through these various initiatives. [edit] Alma Mater HymnAim high with STI [edit] External Links

[edit] Muftis and Islamic Women in 17th Century Ottoman Society
|
This request for creation has been reviewed. The reviewer comments appear below the article text.
Women's rights in Ottoman society were not completely abandoned and repressed. During the 17th century, learned scholars referred to as”muftis” were responsible for protecting their rights and ensuring that they were not taken advantage of by men. Table of Contents
Islamic women in the Ottoman Empire were protected by legal rights which were endorsed by a complex court system conformed of judges referred to as qadi (Alfred and Overfield, 64) These qadi were in charge of analyzing each case presented to the court and interpreting it in terms of the Islamic Law. Although they used the Quran and the Hadith to make the decisions, they also took into account the legal opinions or fatwa (Alfred and Overfield, 64) of the muftis (Alfred and Overfield, 65). The muftis play a central role in this decision-making process because as learned scholars, their opinions about a certain case were recorded and could affect the judge's decision. A judge or any other individual could request the muftis' help in legal matters. Depending on the standing of a mufti, his fatwa could overrule the judge's decision in certain cases. Arranging Marriages One of the cases presented to the mufti Ramli was about a girl who, being a minor, was married off by her brother and once she reached adulthood wanted to annul her marriage. However, her husband argued that she wasn't able to do this because her brother "had acted as an agent to her father"(qtd. In Alfred and Overfield,66). She, on the other hand, claimed her brother had married her off while her father was away on a journey. In response to this situation, Ramli expressed that "if her husband proved his claim, then her choice is cancelled"(qtd in Alfred and Overfield,66). However, if her father had authorized the brother to arrange the marriage, then she was not able to annul the marriage. She only had a choice if the marriage was arranged with her brother as a guardian because "only the father's and grandfather's marriage arrangements cannot be cancelled"(qtd. in Alfred and Overfield,66) Divorce and Annulment Ramli received a case in which a poor woman was abandoned by her husband and suffered from him leaving her with no support or legal provider. "She therefore asked the Shafi to annul the marriage" (qtd. in Alfred and Overfield, 66) and as proof brought two witnesses to support her claim. Her marriage was annulled and she went on to remarry. However, the first husband appeared again and wanted to cancel the judgment. To this, the mufti answered that once the whole process was done, the annulment was reasonable and nobody could nullify it. Violence Against Women Ramli was also approached with cases about peasants. A man kidnapped a woman who was married to someone else and took her to the shaykh2 (qtd. in Alfred and Overfiled, 67) of the village who gave them hospitality. There, the man "consummated the marriage" (qtd. in Alfred and Overfield, 67) with the argument that relations existed between him and the woman. This case was considered to be a serious crime and according to Ramli both the kidnapper and the shaykh deserved a beating and extensive imprisonment. Ramli even conceived the idea of execution for these men because they had completely disobeyed God. Ramli also expressed that people associated with this type of crime would be punished by God. [edit] International Center for Automotive Research (ICAR)
ICAR is the International Center for Automotive Research. It is the key part of a 400 acre industrial technology research campus [formerly Centennial Campus] in Greenville, SC. It is adjacent to the 1,100 acre Millenial Campus, which houses corporate offices. As part of a push to recreate upstate South Carolina into a research and engineering center, business and government leaders studied technology centers in Raleigh, Redmond, and San Jose. After BMW built a factory in neighboring Spartanburg County, the research took a distinctly automotive direction. Clemson University sponsored the creation of an automotive research and educational facility. The entire research campus was renamed ICAR in recognition of the significance. Principle partners include Clemson University, the state of South Carolina, Michelin, and BMW. Timken, Michelin, and BMW, all with powerful local presences, fund research through the university, and the state offers matching funds. Microsoft and IBM are the most recent partners and are partnering with Michelin in vehicle electronic system integration. Private industry developed much of the curriculum, which combines mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. BMW and Michelin engineers teach in the graduate school. The S.C. General Assembly paid for much of the center through the Research Centers of Excellence Act and the State General Obligation Economic Development Bond Act. To date, the state has given BMW $400 in job-creation incentives, $10 million to Clemson University to create professorships, and $40 to equip the Graduate Engineering Center. This is in addition to $95 million in normal educational support. 250 acres have been developed, and the state built all roads in advance through the normal budget. The state expects 4,000 permanent engineering and high-tech jobs to be added over the next 20 years, especially through BMW expansion. [edit] Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
As scientists already know so much information about Alzheimer’s disease, research about MCI is stated to be at the early stage of Alzheimer’s. The only thing they do know about MCI is that it affects ones memory, language, or any other mental function that is severe enough to show up on tests but not so severe that it interferes with daily activities. The only type of MCI that is best studied involves a memory problem called amnestic MCI. Research shows that people with MCI have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s in the next few years if the MCIs main focus is memory. Fortunately, not everyone who has MCI develops Alzheimer’s in his or her later years. Unfortunately, just like Alzheimer’s, there is no cure for MCI. There has been a FDA funded trial that showed 10 milligrams of Donepezil (Aricept) daily can help reduce the risk of MCI turning into Alzheimer’s disease. The downside to the trial was the benefit of the Donepezil disappeared within three years. The trial also showed that 2,000 international units of Vitamin E daily did not reduce the risk of MCI progressing. Today, Donepezil is currently FDA approved and is used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Another study that has failed was the use of Galantamine (Razadyne) as a treatment for MCI. Galantamine is an Alzheimer drug. What Galantamine did was improve the cognitive abilities in those who took Galantamine in 12 months than those who took the placebo. Deterioration in activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing was less than half compared to the placebo group. Sadly, Galantamine was noted for the significantly greater number in deaths than those who just took the placebo. [edit] Sourceshttp://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mild-cognitive-impairment/DS00553

Rated pound for pound the best boxer on the planet in his prime, Jones won a cluster of world titles and was named Fighter of the Decade in 1999 by the American Boxing Writers Association. But at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Jones copped probably the worst miscarriage of Olympic ring justice in the final. Fighting local hope Park Si Hun, Jones landed 86 punches to 32, but the judges gave the decision to the hopelessly outclassed Park 3-2. The three judges who voted against Jones were eventually suspended. The long-held assumption is money changed hands but the IOC still stands by the decision. The good part? It helped lead to a new scoring system for Olympic boxing. Wow if I was Roy Jones I would have been really upset losing this match with the numbers that he put up. Its really upsetting to see people giveing the match to the lower class player who clearly got beat. The guy has been working for this day for quite sometime and to be dishonored like this is terrible. I am glad they got suspended from the sport.
England's greatest soccer captain was arrested in Bogota, Colombia, en route to the 1970 finals in Mexico. He was suspected of pinching a £600 ($1580) emerald bracelet from a shop. All England was convinced it was a fit-up, and British Prime Minister Harold Wilson ensured diplomatic muscles were flexed to get Moore off. The charge was dropped but only after Moore had been held for three days. Of course the mans famous so he is going to get away with the crime at hand. This really makes me mad he clearly stole something from the store but because the prime minister watches soccer and likes him hes free to go. Oh im sorry he did do three days, you have to think if that was one of us we would have easily been convicted of the crime. Camp Staaldraad The boot camp the Springbok squad was put through preparing for the 2003 World Cup by coach Rudolf Straeuli was a national scandal and made the rest of the rugby world roll its collective eyes. Pictures of naked South African players carrying railway tracks and tractor tyres and huddling in a freezing dam were all part of Straeuli's campaign to toughen his players up. Other highlights included fitness instructors smashing eggs on players' heads. Springbok manager Gideon Sam reckoned the exercise was "mild" compared to what many African people put up with every day. "The players looked like prisoners of war. I have no problem with it," he added. Needless to say, Straeuli was a goneburger straight after the cup, in which the Springboks lost in the quarter-finals to the All Blacks. Well I guess his style didn't pay off to well. Whats wrong with doing running and regular stuff to get your team ready you have to go all out and humilate the other people. Im glad this man lost in the world cup, he used a tactic that shouldn't be used. Hopefully he learned his lesson. Fine Cotton The most celebrated racing ring-in in Australasian equine history. In August 1984 at Brisbane's Eagle Farm course, an ordinary 8-year-old gelding, Fine Cotton, was replaced for a novice handicap by a horse called Bold Personality, complete with white paint on his legs in a crude attempt to match Fine Cotton's white markings on his hind legs. Officials smelt a rat when betting on Fine Cotton dived in from 33-1 to 7-2. The horse won by a short head, but with the paint beginning to run down the horse's legs as it returned to scale and some onlookers shouting "ring-in" the game was up. New Zealand trainer Hayden Haitana shot through shortly after the race, only to be nabbed by police in South Australia and subsequently jailed along with scam organiser John Gillespie. But it involved some of Australia's big racing names, and prominent bookmakers Bill and Robbie Waterhouse were warned off the country's tracks for 14 years. And Fine Cotton? Now 30, he's believed living in retirement on the outskirts of Brisbane. Well there was no getting out of this one. You have to realize you are going to get caught if you pull something like this. People have money riding on these horses if they lose they will try to find something so they can get the money back. You can't bring a ringer in to do the race, race with what you have. I am glad that these idiots are getting caught cheating, just do it fair and maybe you will be able to pull it off. NASCAR Scandal! Toyota, Waltrip in shame, fined big time For those who haven't heard, NASCAR's season-opening Daytona 500 race this weekend has been marred by controversy from the rookie Toyota camp. On Sunday, Michael Waltrip had his No. 55 Toyota confiscated by NASCAR officials after inspectors found an odorless, Vaseline-like substance in the car's engine. Later in the week, NASCAR handed down punishment to Michael Waltrip Racing, which included the ejection of team vice president of competition Bobby Kennedy and Crew Chief David Hyder from the garage at Daytona. Hyder was also fined $100,000, the largest fine ever handed down by NASCAR. Waltrip himself was penalized with a loss of 100 drivers points and his qualifying time from pole day on Feb. 11th was thrown out. Elizabeth Waltrip, Michael's wife and the official owner of his car, was also docked 100 owners points. Waltrip really took a low blow in this one. I don't think you will find him cheating again. Not only did he loose position points but lots of money. I think next time he will take closer consideration before he decides to cheat again, that is if he's dumb enough to cheat again. [edit] Lepavina Monastery
Lepavina is a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the village of Lepavina, near the town of Koprivnica in the Republic of Croatia. It is dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. [edit] From the Beginning Until the World War IIAccording to an old local chronicle, the Lepavina monastery was founded around 1550, very soon after the emergence of the first Serbian settlements in this region. A monk from the Hilandar Monastery (on the Athos peninsula, Greece), Jefrem (Ephraim) Vukodabović, born in Herzegovina, together with two monks from Bosnia, built a wooden church here. They were soon joined by several other monks and the institution, according to the chronicle, acquired the status of a monastery. In August of 1557, Turks and the Islamized inhabitants of Stupčanica, Pakrac and Bijela, under the leadership of Zarep-Agha Ali, burnt down the church and the monastic buildings, four monks were killed and two taken to slavery. In 1598 Hieromonk Gregory, also from the Hilandar Monastery, came to Lepavina with two monks from the Mileševa Monastery, and they re-established the monastic community and rebuilt the edifices. In 1630 the Orthodox population of this region, due to their constant involvement in the fights against the Turks and their allies, received great privileges, which created the conditions for building activity on a larger scale. Archimandrite Visarion (Bessarion) came to Lepavina in 1635 to become the head of the community, and under his auspices in 1636-1642 a larger monastery complex developed. In June of 1642 Count Johannes Galler confirmed the rights of the monastery to all the possessions donated by the dwellers of Branjska and Sesvečani. The same was done in charters by Baron Sigmund von Eibiswald, Voivode Gvozden with Đorđe Dobrojević, Blaž Pejašinović and Voivode Radovan (5 February 1644), Baron Honorius von Trauttmansdorff (10 July 1644) and Count Georg Ludwig von Schwarzenberg (23 November 1644). History of the Lepavina Monastery is inseparable from history of the Serbs in the Varaždin Generalat, who identified with Orthodoxy and mostly defied the union with the Roman Catholic Church. The monks took part in the conflicts of the local population against the social injustice: in 1666 they suffered in the great uprising led by the Križevci judge Osmokruhović, and in 1672, together with the monks of the Gomirje Monastery (14 men in total), they were sentenced to galley slavery and sent to Malta. On 24 November 1715 (13 November according to the Julian style) Hegumen (Abbot) Kodrat (Quadratus) was shot dead at the threshold of the monastery church, which was a consequence of conflicts with neighbouring Uniate (Greek Catholic) clergy. At the end of 1692 and the beginning of 1693, Lepavina hosted Serbian Patriarch of Peć, Arsenije (Arsenius) III Čarnojević (or Crnojević). He was gathering the local Orthodox people and preaching, and also visiting the local voivodes of Krajina, which enhanced the reputation of the abbey. After the Orthodox Monastery of Marča was handed over to the Greek Catholics, Lepavina became the major centre of Orthodoxy in the region. In 1734 the Orthodox population of the Varaždin Generalat succeeded in obtaining the permission to have their own Orthodox bishop – the Greek Catholic bishop received as his headquarters the recently seized Monastery of Marča, while Lepavina was assigned as the residence of the new Orthodox bishop. However, because of Lepavina’s peripheral position, the final seat of the Orthodox bishopric became Severin, while the diocese was called the Eparchy of Lepavina and Severin. The first bishop of Lepavina and Severin, Simeon (Filipović) was buried in Lepavina – he died in the investigative custody in Koprivnica, which was yet another consequence of gradual imposition of the church Union on the local Orthodox. Although life under Empress Maria Theresa was not easy for the Orthodox – for a short time Orthodoxy was even declared illicit, and the Lepavina Monastery should have become Greek Catholic – the still-standing monastery church was built in the mid-18th century. The project was realised under the guidance of Nikola Popović, the former ‘protopresbyter of Croatia’ and parish priest of Pisanica, where he also had built a nice church. Nikola took the vows and became the archimandrite of Lepavina with the name Nikifor (Nicephorus). On 25 March 1753 the completed Baroque church was consecrated by Arsenije (Arsenius, Teofanović) the Bishop of Kostajnica and Zrinopolje, who resided mainly in Severin. The World War II was especially difficult period. Immediately after the occupation, the brethren were arrested and taken to a concentration camp. Hieromonk Joakim (Joachim, Babić) was killed and the others were deported to Serbia. On 27 October 1943 the monastery was bombarded, monastic buildings were almost completely destroyed, while the church and the dormitory were heavily damaged. Nevertheless, in the part of the dormitory that escaped destruction, the part of the monastery library remained intact and was appropriated by the Greek Catholic clergy. [edit] After the World War IIAfter the war, the only inhabitant of the monastery was Father Simeon (Sakulj), who partially renovated it and returned the usurped property. By the efforts of Metropolitan Jovan (John, Pavlović) of Zagreb and Ljubljana, who became the head of the diocese in 1977, the monastery regained the old glory and importance. The connection with the Hilandar Monastery was revived in 1984, when monk Gavrilo (Gabriel, Vučković) came from there and became Lepavina’s hegumen and finally archimandrite. The monastery was renovated with the help of the World Council of Churches, Evangelical Youth Group of Württemberg and the members of the Evangelical Church in Stuttgart. Thanks to the ardent work of Father Gavrilo (Vučković), the spiritual life is on the rise: there are several brethren and novices, the journal Put, Istina i Život (‘The Way, the Truth, and the Life’) is published, and the monastery is an extremely popular destination for pilgrims, not only from Croatia, but from the whole Europe, and even from the other continents. It is visited by streams of Orthodox and Roman Catholic believers, as well as by those who are looking for the answers to some spiritual questions or help in adversities. Lepavina serves as a bridge in the new dialogue of love between the Eastern and Western Churches, the old dissensions are being forgotten and the new atmosphere of mutual understanding and true deeper rapprochement is being created. [edit] The Monastery TreasuresThe monastery is proud of its wonder-working icon of the Mother of God that makes it such an important pilgrimage site. It is painted in the Creto-Venetian style from the beginning of the 16th century. It is not known how it came to the monastery, but the local tradition asserts it was here when the monastic community was in its infancy. One of the features of interest was the iconostasis from 1775, a work by one of the best representatives of the Serbian early Baroque, Jovan Četirević-Grabovan, destroyed during the World War II, with only three pictures remaining. Besides these, the monastery keeps the icons of St Simeon Nemanja, St Sava and the icon of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Mother of God, all painted in Lepavina in 1647. Especially valuable are the manuscripts and old printed books. Among the oldest are the two Tetraevangelia from the 13th and 14th centuries, one of the Serbian-Raška and the other of the Macedonian recensions, both with exquisite initials. As Lepavina served as an elementary school for attaining literacy and other skills, a lot of written material and copied books was deposited here. [edit] External Links[edit] SourcesDr Dušan Kašić. [edit] Guy Môquet
PLEASE IGNORE THIS ARTICLE, IT HAS SINCE BEEN CREATED AND I HAVE INTEGRATED THE CONTENT Guy Môquet (1924 - 22 October 1941 was a young French Communist militant who was among the executed political prisoners of the Châteaubriant camp during the Second World War. [edit] Father and Uncle: Prosper and Henri MôquetGuy Môquet was the son of the Communist député of the Seventeenth Arrondissement of Paris, Prosper Môquet. As the French Communist Party was dissolved by Édouard Daladier in September 1939, Prosper Môquet was arrested on 10 October, 1939, stripped of his mandate in February, 1940, and later deported to Algeria. Henri, the brother of Prosper, was concierge of the Communist party chair. By the end of the summer of 1940, he was a member of the party's clandestine police presence. [edit] BiographyGuy Môquet was a high school student at lycée Carnot and a fervent young Communist militant. After the occupation of Paris by the Germans and the installation of the Vichy government, Guy began an arduous militant campaign to post fliers in his neighbourhood denouncing the new government and demanding the liberation of its prisoners. He was arrested, at the age of 16, on 13 October 1940, in the Métro station Gare de l'Est by French police who were looking for Communist militants. The police behaved in a friendly way toward him in the hopes that he would reveal the names of his father's friends. Imprisoned in Fresnes Prison, then in Clairvaux, he was later transferred to the camp at Châteaubriant, where other Communist militants were detained. On 20 October 1941, Karl Hotz, commander of occupation forces in Loire-Atlantique, was executed in Nantes by three young Communists. The Minister of the Interior of the Pétain government, Pierre Pucheu, chose Communist prisoners to be executed "in order to avoid having to shoot 50 good French people." His selection comprised 18 imprisoned in Nantes, 27 at Châteaubriant, and 5 from Nantes who were imprisoned in Paris. Two days later, nine posts were erected the Sablière, the vast quarry at the exit of Châteaubriant. In three groups, the 27 prisoners were shot, having refused blindfolds, and died crying "Vive la France." Guy Môquet was the youngest. He was executed at 4PM. Before having been shot, he had written a letter to his parents. His younger brother, Serge - 12 years old at the time - was traumatised by the death of his brother and survived him only by a few days. [edit] LegacyIn homage to Guy Môquet, a street and a Métro station in Paris were named after him in 1946. Many other place names across France also bear his name. Châteaubriant dedicated a high school to him. The poet Louis Aragon dedicated to him, along with three other resisters (Gabriel Péri, Honoré d'Estienne d'Orves, and Gilbert Dru, altogether two Christians and two Communists), his poem "La rose et le réséda," which contained the famous line "He who believed in heaven \ He who believed not". Shortly after his election, French President-elect Nicolas Sarkozy stated that his first order of business as President would be to make all schools read the final letter of Guy Môquet, in order to teach children the horror and barbarism of war.
