The Arkansas-LSU rivalry, now known as The Battle for the Golden Boot, is a sports rivalry dating back to 1901 between the teams of the University of Arkansas (the Razorbacks) and Louisiana State University (the Tigers), which exists almost exclusively between the respective programs' football teams.

[edit] Pre-Golden Boot era
Arkansas and LSU played each other during the 1906-36 and 1953-56 regular seasons on a yearly basis. In addition, they played each other once in 1901, and at the end of the regular season in the Cotton Bowl twice, on January 1 of 1947 and 1966. (for the 1946 and 1965 seasons, respectively)
In 1992, LSU and Arkansas resumed their yearly rivalry after Arkansas joined the SEC (Arkansas had previously been in the SWC). The teams played each other 4 times in the conference before the introduction of the Golden Boot trophy in 1996.
[edit] Golden Boot era
The Golden Boot is a trophy that has been awarded each year since 1996 to the winner of the annual Battle for the Golden Boot football matchup (set on the day after Thanksgiving) between the Arkansas Razorbacks and the LSU Tigers. It has been played on alternating years in either Arkansas (generally Little Rock, which is the secondary home stadium for the Razorbacks), or Louisiana (always Baton Rouge). Arkansas' home game is played in Little Rock, not the Razorbacks' on-campus stadium in Fayetteville, since the student body is away from campus for the Thanskgiving holiday. The series represents an important game in the SEC Western Division, with the either Arkansas or LSU representing the West in the SEC Championship game six out of the last seven years.
[edit] Trophy
The trophy was introduced to the series prior to the 1996 season.[1] It weighs approximately 175 pounds (a little less than 80 kilograms) and is generally considered the heaviest "trophy" awarded in all of college football. [2]
The trophy itself stands a little over 4 feet tall, is molded out of 24-karat gold, and resembles the outline of the states of Arkansas and Louisiana connected, thus making a boot shape.
LSU won the inaugural "trophy meeting", and for the next 6 years, the trophy changed hands every meeting, beginning with LSU in 1997. After Arkansas' victory in 2002, LSU won the rivalry, and thus the trophy, four consecutive times. The trophy returned to Arkansas' possession on November 23, 2007 when the Razorbacks stunned top-ranked, and eventual national champions, LSU 50-48 in three overtimes in Baton Rouge. The victory was the first for former Razorback coach Houston Nutt in five tries in Tiger Stadium.
