Implemented a JSON version of the linkchecker

var f=function(){
    addPortletLink('p-tb', 'javascript:json_external_links(wgPageName)', 'Check external links (JSON)', 't-jsonchecklinks');
}
if(doneOnloadHook) f(); /* if imported dynamically */
else addOnloadHook(f);

function json_external_links(arg)
{
    document.getElementById('contentSub').innerHTML += '<br /><strong>Grabbing external link information. <br />Please wait...</strong>';
    var pageurl = 'http://tools.wikimedia.de/~dispenser/cgi-bin/jsonchecklinks.py?page='+arg;
    var scriptElem = document.createElement( 'script' );
    scriptElem.setAttribute( 'src' , pageurl );
    scriptElem.setAttribute( 'type' , 'text/javascript' );
    document.getElementsByTagName( 'head' )[0].appendChild( scriptElem );
}

function checklinksDone()
{
    alert(checklinks);
    alert(checklinks.title);
    alert(checklinks.links);
}
</script>

I saw what you were trying to do. AJAX doesn't work because of the cross-domain issues. So I've implemented a JSON version of the checklinks. I'm looking forward to what you can come up with. — Dispenser 05:14, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Admin coaching

Sorry for the long break, I've been extraordinarily busy with school the last little while. Anyway, if you'd like to continue the coaching, could you take another look at questions 1-3 under the heading "Likely questions" and give them another shot using the feedback I left on your coaching page. Just a quick note to say that {{DEFAULTSORT}} is redundant to {{lifetime}}, which is a better way to do it on biographical articles. J Milburn (talk) 18:17, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

defaultsort

Hi, please do not add defaultsort to articles on people, especially if they already have the {{lifetime}} template as lifetime does the same thing that {{defaultsort}} does. See here for an explanation on how to use it. For An Angel (talk) 19:32, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello? In case you didn't know, I'm undoing all your edits. For An Angel (talk) 19:57, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
And it makes no sense to apply it to roads, such as Mathew Street. --Rodhullandemu 21:36, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Templates

I note that you are replacing {{defaultsort} with {{Lifetime}} . Unfortunately, this seems to be screwing up the sort order; e.g. Alan Ball, Jr. was sorted under "Jr." rather than "Ball". Can I ask you to check those you've done so far and put them right, if they are mis-sorting. Cheers. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 16:42, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

defaultsort

Hi. I just want to inform you that special characters should not be include in DEFAULTSORT. Try to replace them with characters with no accents, etc. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:05, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

For example change "ã" with "a". -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:16, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Lifetime sorting

Please exercise caution when you are sorting royals with the lifetime sort. For instance, it is incorrect to sort Alexandra of Denmark as Denmark, Alexandra of since "Denmark" is not a surname. The same thing goes for Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. You sorted him as Gotha, Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and. The correct sorting is Alfred of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke. Sort royals as <Name> of <Place>, <Title>. For instance, Prince Alfonso, Count of Caserta is Alfonso of Caserta, Count, Prince. Thanks. Charles 22:47, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Same concerns with other nobility.[1] You should not be using automated tools to make buggy conversions. Given the quantity of edits here, you should have had a Bot approval. Given the controversy, any further conversions to {{lifetime}} will result in a block. Gimmetrow 23:27, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken

There should almost never be a reason to replace [[redirect]] with [[target|redirect]]. This kind of change is almost never an improvement, and it can actually be detrimental.

Please stop

Please stop massively substituting this overly and unnecessarily complex template (as seen here) for the simpler code that is used on most biographical articles. Even editors such as myself who have edited here for years can't make sense of this template. Please stop. Badagnani (talk) 17:48, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

content copied from Template talk:Lifetime by Magioladitis (talk) 18:06, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

And if you do decide to continue, please learn the correct use of the sort key value. You're regularly replacing a good existing sort key with a bad one... There are a lot of fussy (and silly rules) for sort keys; while most of them are [Lastname, Firstname], there are lots of exceptions... For example, a mixed case name, like "laRue", has to have a sort key value of "Larue"; the correct sort key value for "A'Court" is "Acourt", and etc. etc. Studerby (talk) 04:36, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
And also, besides regular screwing up sort keys for names with accents and such, you're also fouling up some Asian names. Many such, such as Chinese names in traditional format, have the family name first, followed by the personal name. For example, in the name "Chen Lian", the family name is "Chen" and the sort key should be "Chen, Lian" and NOT "Lian, Chen". Studerby (talk) 04:56, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Stop now with these edits, and seek consensus before you implement {{lifetime}} in any more articles. There are opposition at Template talk:Lifetime. The template will probably be nominated for deletion. Rettetast (talk) 21:25, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Last warning. I don't want to use the block button. There are also a lot of your edits that removes the sort key. See [2]. Rettetast (talk) 21:30, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

[3]. Another problem edit. I see a lot of errors in the edits. I will rollback them in a while. I suggest you start cleaning up after yourself. Rettetast (talk) 21:47, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I just want to agree with this. Please stop changing to Template:Lifetime before we have full agreement that this is actually a good move. gren グレン 22:11, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2008_May_22#Template:Lifetime. Rettetast (talk) 22:41, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Archanamiya, don't let these wikipedians fool you. This is an already accepted template that survived a deletion reveiw in January. Yes the new deletion discussion should run it's course... but it's wikipedians like Magioladitis who are sabotaging the dicussion by removing the templates from pages so that people won't see it and comment on the discussion. You probably need to be more carful with how you set the sort keys but beyond that you are not guilty of any wrongdoing. --Dr who1975 (talk) 04:24, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
No, really. Stop. Whether or not existence of the template is "accepted" or not -- and that it's up for deletion suggests its far for that -- edits that do nothing but refactor from one form to the other are at best useless, and at worst disruptive if they're occurring at a disproportionate speedy and scale.
