[edit] Notes

  • Fastest Lap: Gerhard Berger 1m 45.747s
  • This was the final pole position and victory for Gerhard Berger.
  • Berger replaced Alexander Wurz at Benetton after recovering from sinus problems and the sad loss of his Father Johann.
  • Giancarlo Fisichella was challenging Berger for the win until he punctured his car on the debris of Jan Magnussens blown engine, ironically the same debris had helped him gain the lead as the smoke from the engine delayed Berger prior to his pit stop. Berger retook the lead 2 laps later.
  • Despite beating local hero Michael Schumacher, Berger's win was well received by the crowd and the majority of the F1 world.
