- Fastest Lap: David Coulthard 1m 23.220s
- First win: David Coulthard
- Heinz Harald Frentzen spun at turn one at the first start and stalled in the spare at his second but despite a lack of retirements he still finished a superb 6th
- Ukyo Katayama, in a separate incident to Frentzens, didn't take the second start as he had been involved in an accident at the back of the grid in which his car was sent into a horrifying barrel roll.
