The New York Mets' 1979 season was the 18th regular season for the Mets, who played played home games at Shea Stadium. Led by manager Joe Torre, the team had a 63-99 record yielding a 6th place finish in the National League's Eastern Division.

- February 7, 1979: Jesse Orosco was sent by the Minnesota Twins to the New York Mets to complete an earlier deal made on December 8, 1978. The Minnesota Twins sent a player to be named later and Greg Field (minors) to the New York Mets for Jerry Koosman.
