The New York Mets' 1988 season was the 27th regular season for the Mets. They went 100-60 and finished 1st in the NL East. They were managed by Davey Johnson. They played home games at Shea Stadium.

- December 11, 1987: Jesse Orosco was traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Oakland Athletics and New York Mets to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Bob Welch and Matt Young to the Oakland Athletics. The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Jack Savage to the New York Mets. The Oakland Athletics sent Alfredo Griffin and Jay Howell to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Oakland Athletics sent Kevin Tapani and Wally Whitehurst to the New York Mets.
- December 11, 1987: Rafael Santana was traded by the New York Mets with Victor Garcia (minors) to the New York Yankees for Darren Reed, Phil Lombardi, and Steve Frey. [1]
