[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Berbers

I believe this very unique culture, with a one-of-a-kind alphabet Tifinagh and history dating back as far as ancient Egypt, merits its own WikiProject. There is a beautiful portal at Portal:Berbers, and I think Wikipedia would benefit greatly from this. Chris 02:19, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

We're up and running! Please visit and contribute at Wikipedia:WikiProject Berbers! Thanks! Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 05:39, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Help with identification

Hi folks, I started the article Ali Pasha Sherif a while but I could use some assistance. In essence, everything on this fellow I have researched is about his history as a horse breeder, but the articles I used suggest that he had some significant influence in the Egyptian government of the mid-1800s. Problem is, the horse breeding histories are vague (one said he was the "president of the Chamber of Commerce" for crying out loud!) the titles and claims of his fame conflict, people confuse titles and honorifics with names, and in short, I can't find his father's name on the list of Governors of Damascus, which he supposedly was, I can't find Ali Pasha Sherif on the list of Foreign Ministers of Egypt (which allegedly he was) and basically, while the fellow obviously had money and political power from somewhere, my sources are neither definitive nor helpful. For all I know there is another wikipedia article on this fellow under a different name. Can you skim the article for me and let me know (on the talk page would be fine) if this fellow or his father, El Sayed Mohammed, went under other names and titles? Or edit to correct information? My stake in this is that the fellow was a significant breeder of Arabian horses, worth a study for that reason alone, but I also want the article itself to be an accurate biography of the whole person. Can anyone help? Help! Help!! Montanabw(talk) 05:16, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cairo Metro Article

I noticed that some of the stops were missing from the Cairo Metro Article, noticeably Sakenet Al Maadi, Maadi, and Hadiqet Al Maadi. Apart from that it is quite a good article and further more I was surprised and happy to find it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.139.85.155 (talk) 21:26, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sharm el Sheikh

Hello everyone,

My comments on the Sharm page of Wikipedia.

I was searching in Wikipedia to find out about the population of Sharm. I didn't find much information in the way of demographics. There's no mention of any challenging environmental issues that are unique to the delicate environment of the Sinai (both underwater and on land).

There's some very obvious marketing language used. The examples are too numerous to mention -- it needs to be read and then, edited. The beauty of Sharm/Sinai is obvious, there's no need to push the "glamorous nightlife" or the names of certain bars.

[edit] Requesting updated assessment

Hi folks--I'd like to request an updated assessment for Abu Mena, which has been significantly rewritten since its original assessment. Thanks! Dppowell 00:40, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Race of Ancient Egyptians

There is currently some controversy regarding the scope and title of the above article, and, potentially, other articles which may be related to the same subject. Editors interested in this project may be interested in that article as well. John Carter 14:01, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding the article about Kantar

Hello members of the Egyptian WikiProject. I've created an article about the Kantar, an Egyptian weight measure, but it's orphaned as no other article links to it. Please find an appropriate article to link to the Kantar one. It would be most helpful.--Ivo Emanuel Gonçalves talk / contribs (join WP:PT) 21:33, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ahmed El Esseily

This unsourced article about an Egyptian TV personality has been nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2008_January_30#Ahmed_El_Esseily. Can anybody on this Wikiproject shed light on the notability of this person, and if necessary provide sources that indicate his notability (reviews, awards, major credits)? Even a link to material in Arabic would be something (google translator might not be perfect, but it can capture the gist of things). Thanks, --Paularblaster (talk) 23:11, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

It is my sincerest hope that this statement is not taken as being an attempt to subvert this project, take control over it, or any similar thing. However, the Template:AfricaProject has recently had parameters put into it to allow it to provide separate assessments for all the "Africa" projects, including this one. If in the interests of reducing banner clutter the members of this project were to choose to use that banner, please let me know and I can adjust any categories accordingly to permit it. Thank you. John Carter (talk) 00:19, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

No worries, John, but I am against it. I am not clear how it will provide separate assessments for each WikiProject. I am not a member of WikiProject Africa and I don't intend to be. Being part of this project allows me to track articles about Egypt in order of importance without having to go through other projects, so I can choose what I want to work on. The Africa WikiProject is also far too broad, encompassing too many topics that have little to do with each other. You will notice that there is no corresponding WP Asia, but Wikipedia:WikiProject Central Asia, Wikipedia:WikiProject Southeast Asia, etc. which is I what I believe the Africa WP should be broken up into. Even WikiProject Europe doesn't directly cover individual countries like France or Germany which are covered by the daughter WikiProjects--the WP Europe banner is not even on their talk pages. As regards banner clutter, I would have agreed until "nesting" became an option that eliminated that problem entirely. Best to use the template you see on Talk:Germany. Cheers, — Zerida 01:44, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
No problems whatsoever. For what it's worth, though, the banner is set up in such a way so that, if one were to type "Egypt-importance=Top" in, it would place the article in the Cateory:Top-importance Egypt articles. That's the primary reason the banner is 78 kilobytes long, actually. It takes a lot of text to set it up like that for all the projects that will be using it, but such can be done, with a little effort, for any project banner. Anyway, it was just a proposal in any event. And, for what it's worth, I think I actually proposed 5 regional Africa projects myself at one point. The idea didn't fly, and that's why the one base project was ultimately created in its stead. John Carter (talk) 01:53, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Wish your idea had flied, I'd be interested in a North Africa project. It just occurred me that it might make more sense to just eliminate the WP Africa banner instead of the country ones. One of the purposes of creating a daughter WikiProject I imagine is that the parent WP can focus on less things. This is why this project for example doesn't cover most ancient Egyptian topics. Sorry, I don't mean to shoot down the idea, but it's becoming less appealing as I think about it. — Zerida 02:38, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ahmed Orabi

There is a somewhat stale discussion about the proper transliteration of Ahmed Orabi's name in English. Comments are welcome. — Zerida 05:13, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Eftekasat

Hi guys, what's up?! Look, if possible, could someone please recheck the importance of the article since Eftekasat are a very important aspect of Egyptian Music as they were invited to perform at the Carthage Jazz Festival in Tunis and therefore they became an international Egyptian band (probably the first). I think they deserve more than "mid"! Thanks anyway, Maged M. Mahfouz (talk) 15:28, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Maged. The rating system is an informal process. If enough members feel that it should be rated as High, then by all means. I rated the article as Mid based on the notability of the group as compared to other Egyptian artists (whether bands or otherwise). Many Egyptians are still not familiar with this group, so I felt Mid was an appropriate assessment. Others might feel differently, but I can't be sure. — Zerida 04:34, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
"Mid" seems good. "Top" should be reserved for Abdelwahab, Umm Kulthum, and Roubi  :) (Just kidding about the last one.) Badagnani (talk) 04:43, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

So can we do a voting or something Zerida? And about Egyptians not being familiar with that group, well not many know about Redeemers but they are quite important since they are the first Symphonic Metal band in Egypt (and they are quite good too :P)! And Badagnani, with all due respect to the former two (and please dont say that last name in front of me again :D) Eftekasat are quite important since 1) They are one of the very first Jazz bands in Egypt (and i'm sure you know by now that Egypt coming up with a Jazz band is a miracle in itself!) 2) They are international. 3) They are one of the very first Egyptian bands to make an album! 4) They are involved greatly in the local Music scene (probably more than any other Egyptian band) since on average they do about 2 or 3 concerts a month (in Cairo and/or Alexandria) and they were invited to several SOS festivals (not sure how many though :)) 5) I dont see why they shouldnt be given more than 'mid' if we compared them to Umm Kulthum! :P:D I mean, ya Umm Kulthum is probably the most notable singer in Egypt (and probably the Middle East) but so is Eftekasat. I mean, please provide a 'greater' or more notable band than Eftekasat. :) Maged M. Mahfouz (talk) 20:59, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Guys, i added the article Mouled Sidi El-Latini to the project so i'm requesting a rating on this one too! Thanks. :) Maged M. Mahfouz (talk) 21:18, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

There are certainly other "bands" in Egypt. What about the "boy band" with four guys? (I've forgotten their name.) "Top" importance should be reserved only for articles of only the very highest importance to the subject of Egypt. Badagnani (talk) 20:03, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
What about the "boy band" with four guys? Who? I'm rather out of the loop when it comes to these things, though I listen to a lot of Egyptian music (mosly classic stuff like Abdel Halim). There's been so much talk about Eftekasat though, that now I hope to see one of their concerts sometime. — Zerida 20:25, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
I think its of mid-importance to a Project dedicated to Egypt and the Egyptian people. If its a major and widely popular band in Egypt, then I guess it could be of high importance. These ratings are not that critical anyhow. As for Mouled Sidi el-Latini, it should be either a low or mid. --Al Ameer son (talk) 20:34, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

They are called WAMA! But they are not notable since they just released some stuff, made a little fuss, did a few concerts and then died. So? I dont even hear their name now! Another band was MTM but they like WAMA released a couple of albums, made a little fuss and believe me, even among all my "listen-to-crappy-Muzak" friends, people just had some 'fun' with their Music and that's it! These are amateurs. Eftekasat and other bands like Wust El Balad and HateSuffocation are the pros. They are made to last!

However, disregarding all my stated reasons, the fact that Eftekasat are (as far as i know) the first international Egyptian band is an important stop in the history of Egyptian Music. They are probably the first Egyptian band to release an album too! A whole new era is coming up and that is supported by the following facts:

  • The recent release of Wust El Balad's debut album.
  • The preparations of both Anoxia and Redeemers to release their debut albums.
  • The multiple 'bands' concerts like Metal Accord, SOS (which went as far as presenting the Christian band "Better Life"!), a recent Metal concert (sadly, i dont recall the name) which featured about 10 Metal bands and Vader’s concert (the first professional Metal concert in Egypt, let alone a Death Metal band!).

Eftekasat were the leaders and therefore they deserve a rating of "High"!Maged M. Mahfouz (talk) 20:45, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikimania

As you guys might already know, Egypt will be hosting the 2008 Wikimania at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. One last pharaoh just asked me about it, so I thought I'd announce it here in case someone is interested in attending, but doesn't know about it yet. Meno has the details. — Zerida 20:53, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Need Arabic

Need Arabic script at Mohamed Abdelwahab Abdelfattah. Badagnani (talk) 04:18, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Also at Khedivial Opera House. Badagnani (talk) 04:19, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Also, check Arabic at Sayed Awad. Badagnani (talk) 04:19, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Done the former two, but maybe someone should check up on me since i'm not an expert in Arabic! (and yes, i was born and raied in Egypt!) :D Maged M. Mahfouz (talk) 23:28, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

LOL! While it might come as a surprise to some people, it's not very unusual. Anglo-Egyptians abound! The Abdelfattah one looks fine by the way. — Zerida 01:12, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

lol! a friend of mine was raised in British schools in Saudi Arabia; it was taboo to speak Arabic in those schools!! XD i'm quite certain of the very first one, but the second one is kind of confusing! :D Maged M. Mahfouz (talk) 01:37, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

And let's not forget Franco-Egyptians, some of whom grow up speaking primarily French. It's more complicated by the fact that the written and spoken languages are very different. For those who don't know, Egypt has what is called "language schools" where Standard Arabic is barely taught. As for the opera, I had a hard time with that one too. — Zerida 02:00, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

WOW! hold on! i was in a language school and i was taught proper Arabic since KG! i just forgot it coz i took IGCSEs and well, because i hate Arabic and i just shift-deleted it from my system once i had the chance!! :D Maged M. Mahfouz (talk) 03:15, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

From what I observed, the so-called language schools tend to neglect Standard/Classical Arabic a great deal compared to other schools. But the "I hate (classical) Arabic" sentiment (boy quoted in last paragraph) is one you hear quite frequently, so that's certainly a contributing factor. Who knows, maybe the Egyptians will one day come to their senses and switch to writing in something they actually speak :-) The illiteracy rate is another nightmare. — Zerida 03:57, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Language schools dont neglect Arabic! :S Maybe they have their "talk English during breaks" rules but in Arabic classes, its taught quite well, boring but well! And by the way i dont hate 'classic' Arabic; i hate Arabic. I'm obliged to talk Arabic so people would understand me, but if i dont need to i wouldnt do it! I even started to talk pure English with my colleagues who would actually understand what i'm saying! :D Anyway, i need you members of the project to check this out. I tried my best but of course, its crappy and it needs references as usual!! :S Maged M. Mahfouz (talk) 04:49, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal to consolidate African country WikiProject banners

Template:AfricaProject was recently modified, and now contains individual parameters for all countries in Africa (see usage notes). Since project-specific assessment for all African countries can now be accomplished through the template, a proposal has been made at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Africa to consolidate all individual African country WikiProject banners.

Comments or suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you, Black Falcon (Talk) 23:26, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
