[edit] Tasks involving more than one article
[edit] Heraldry by Country Series
A series of articles about the use of heraldry of different countries, ideally featuring the following points:
- Origins/History
- Usage of arms(by whom? nobility/gentry/towns/corporations/anyone)
- Regulation (uncontrolled/government dept/law/heralds)
- Distinctive Features of that country's heraldry
- Current Usage
Add the template {{Heraldry by country}} at the bottom of the article to produce the following navbox
|
|||||
Click on a red link above to create a new article. Click on a blue link for an existing article, which probably needs improvement. Edit the template to add/remove countries.
[edit] Assessment
The quality of articles within the scope of the project can now be assessed by adding a class parameter to the {{WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology}} template on an article's talk page, e.g. {{WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology|class=stub}}. Rating articles in this way allows us to see what articles we need to focus on, and tracking the number of articles in different classes over time will gives us a quantitative measure of the improvement in Wikipedia's coverage of heraldry and vexillology. At the moment around 20 articles need to be assessed. See the assessment department for more details.
[edit] Officers of Arms in the ODNB
The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography contains a large number of biographies of British officers of arms. It would be good if we could get a decent article of each of these heralds. A list can be found here. The ODNB article can obviously be used as a source, see the ODNB website. Most public libraries in the UK and Ireland allow their members to access the ODNB website from home, see here for more information
[edit] Improving national flag pages
It would be useful to develop recommended guidelines for national flag pages (Flag of ... pages), including improving and promulgating the Template:National flag infobox.

[edit] Image requests
- Note: There are a lot more requests at commons:Commons talk:WikiProject Flags. —Nightstallion (?) 22:49, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Add requests for images of coats of arms, flags or other heraldic/vexillological images here Created images should be uploaded to Commons. Heraldry and vexillology articles needing images can be found in the category Heraldry and vexillology articles needing images.
- I didn't know where to post this, so I'll put it here. This is not exactly a request for an image, but more of a request for information about an image. I was perusing the Commons and found this image:
Can anyone provide more information. The description looks Polish to me, but darned if I know. It looks like it may be a grant of arms of some sort and may be usable in an heraldic article. Any ideas?--dave-- 20:41, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think it is Polish (the History of Poland category on the Commons version of the page would suggest so). From the description on the image page, I would guess it's a diploma/grant of nobility to Seyfrieda von Rotha in 1464, from the chancellery/chancery of czar/emperor(?) Frederick III (possibly the Holy Roman Emperor; the dates fit). The document would now appear to be in the archives of the archdiocese of Wroclaw. It looks like it might be written in German, but the resolution's not really good enough for me to tell. The file is used in the. From Ennoblement it looks like arms were granted at the same time. Although there are are couple of hundred Polish coat of arms stubs (as I can verify from assessing most of them over the last week), I can't find this particular one. If you want more info you could try dropping a note on the talk page of the user who uploaded it, User:Steifer, either here or at Commons. Dr pda 21:45, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

- The description is Polish alright, and it looks very much like contemporary grants of arms. The style of the drawing is German, so Emperor Frederick III sounds like the most obvious candidate. The seal is also very close to the seal of Charles IV (see: Golden Bull). Although unlikely, it is perhaps wrong to rule out Frederick III of Saxony completely. In Danish history, arms were normally granted upon ennoblement, and in this case, Danish culture is no doubt a copy of German practice. In any case, we need a Wappenrolle of German heraldry in order to make an identification. Very interesting example though, I'd always thought the two horns on the helmet were distinct of Danish heraldry. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 22:36, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Two Flag Image Requests - Rodrigues Island and St. Barts
Hello! I hope this is the right place to make requests (if not I apologize). I usually haven't made Wikipedia flag or image requests in the past, but there are two flags that I would like to see included in Wikipedia (if possible). I don't have any of the skills to create these flags myself, but I was hoping that someone on this project would like to try it.
- The first is the flag of Rodrigues (island), an island dependency in the Indian Ocean controlled by Mauritius. There is a picture of the flag that I found on French Wikipedia on the Rodrigues page. However, when I put it on the web page, I discovered that it was tagged for deletion since it was taken directly from the FOTW website. I was wondering if anyone could try to create and replace the Rodrigues flag with an image that can be used on Wikipedia. Here is the flag on FOTW. [1]
- The second flag that I am requesting (if possible) is for the French dependency of Saint-Barthélemy, which is better known as St. Barts. It was recently politically separated from the neighboring island of Guadeloupe to become its very own French collectivity, a type of territory. However, I have seached and I can't find any images of its unofficial flag on Wikipedia. It is a white flag with the St. Barts coat of arms on it. Here is a picture from FOTW [2] The flag also appears on some St Barts brochures.
I don't have the skills to create these flags myself, since they are both very intricate. However, if someone with more knowledge could try to recreate these flags in a format that can be used on Wikipedia I would really appreciate it! Thank you very much for your time. Have a great day! - Image requests have a better chance if you forward them to WP:GL. They are the ones with the expertise. Valentinian T / C 07:39, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Coat of arms images
- The Coat of arms of Côte d'Ivoire has a typo in it, and is incorrectly colored based on the article. Is anyone in a position to fix this? Thanks! Alan 04:57, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

How would you blazon the Flag of California? —Preceding unsigned comment added by EdwardOConnor (talk • contribs) 22:45, 17 July 2007
- Here's an attempt: Argent a grizzly bear statant proper on a mound vert above the words "CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC" sable; in dexter chief a mullet of five points gules, a base demoted of the same. (I'm not sure about the word "demoted". Whatever is the opposite of "enhanced" is what goes there.) -- I. Pankonin (t/c) 10:06, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

- Statant for a bear wopuld imply standing -- this looks to me, by analogy with a lion, to be passant -- 195.92.40.49 15:38, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
You're right.-- I. Pankonin (t/c) 04:28, 1 December 2007 (UTC) Passant means with the left front paw in the air. If a bear was on two legs it would be "statant on two legs". -- I. Pankonin (t/c) 04:34, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
