Hi Ted! Nice to see you here. Welcome to Wikipedia! --LMS

Hi Larry. Thanks! Happy to be here.

Ted officially rocks by the way. -H

Begorra Ed !! Sorry to see an alterate future. Bono anyone ?

Ed, do you think it would be possible to integrate your TeX hack with the wiki code so that one could type $int_0^x t^2 dt$ and get an integral right away, in png produced by TeX? --AxelBoldt

Possible? Yes. Going to happen? No. There are just way too many security issues that arise when we let the wiki software evaluate arbitrary code.
With "arbitrary code" you mean "arbitrary (La)TeX" code? If so, are there really any dangerous TeX commands? Can you access the file system from withing TeX? --AxelBoldt
Yes, yes, and yes.
Ok, I wasn't aware of that. openout seems to be the problem. I just found a discussion of the very issue at http://math.albany.edu:8800/hm/emj/1995/msg00125.html. But I wonder if running the TeX interpreter under some nobody user in a tmp directory, using chroot(1) so that it can't see anything outside the sandbox, wouldn't solve the problem. Or can you also execute programs from within TeX, or access the net? --AxelBoldt

Hi there, we're planning a Boston meetup on Nov 20 or 21. Leave a note on that page if you think you could make it. :) +sj+ 01:55, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] All over the web

I rarely check to see who's subscribed to my blog on Bloglines, but I happened to take a look today. What do you know, you've listed me as a Designer, hehe - I'd probably call myself a "standards supporter", if I could categorize my site any way I wanted.

I assume you found me through some Eventful comment I made since I've been looking for more reviews of your new site.

Anyway, even though you're not on Wikipedia as often as Flickr, LiveJournal, and del.icio.us, I thought you might enjoy a new Talk entry here. Best of luck on Eventful; it looks like it'll be a great service! Now if I can just integrate all of these folksonomy tools into my beta redesign, I'd be a happy man! --J. [edit] Jimbo Wales to Attend San Diego Meetup on October 18 2005

Hello, Jimbo Wales will be in San Diego to attend OOPSLA and has agreed to come by and visit with the San Diego wikipedians. If you are interested, you will find more info on my talk page. Johntex\talk 00:54, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

Hello Ed, I'm glad you plan to come to the meetup. I've posted info at the Village Signpost, on the Meetup page, and on the San Diego page. I am currently pasting a notice on every user page listed at "Category:Wikipedians in Southern California". It is slow going. If you know anyone in SoCal, or if you would like to take the time to paste notices on people's pages, or if you can think of anywhere else the invite should be posted, please spread the word! Thanks! Johntex\talk 01:51, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
I invited all the "Category:Wikipedians in Southern California" though the letter "L", plus a few random people I'd encountered elsewhere. I'll resume the invitations tomorrow. Johntex\talk 02:07, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Details on the Meetup

I went to the Town and Country area last night to check out restaurants. I've eaten at the restaurants in Town and Country and they weren't that great, ao I wanted to find us somewhere nearby. There is a nice but expensive steak house down the street, but I don't know what everyone's budget is. I picked this place, I hope it is OK with everyone:

  • 7:00pm Tuesday October 18th
  • 24-Hour Valley Kitchen Family Restaurant
  • 875 Hotel Circle South, Mission Valley, 619-819-1017 or 619-298-8282.
  • It is right across Highway 8 from the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center
  • It is very casual and comes highly recommended by the hotel desk. Entrees are $8-$15. They have a wide menu: They have breakfast all-days, salads, burgers, steaks, echilladas, pies, that sort of place.

See you there! Johntex\talk 01:31, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
