[edit] Scope

Dragon Ball is a Japanese metaseries (somewhat, not entirely). It began as a weekly serialized manga (519 chapters and one special), then adapted to an anime (three series, three TV specials, 17 feature films), and spawned dozens of home and arcade video games, toys, clothing, mugs, keychains, action figures, wall scrolls, and other merchandise. Dragon Ball has been translated into dozens of languages in many countries.

All information should be based on the original versions. Mainly, this will mean the Japanese versions (though at least one video game will refer to the English version). Because there are so many, no single English adaptation can be used as the English version. Besides the out-of-print adaptations, there are at least three English anime dubs and another company doing the manga, as well as another company translating the video games (which has been inconsistent at best). It would be inappropriate to pick any single distribution company over another.

The scope of the project will extend to include the manga, anime, video games merchandise. More specifically, the project will include:

  • The manga, television anime, feature films, video games, music;
  • The Dragon Ball universe in general;
  • Individual characters and other elements;
  • Use of mythology, geology, and other inspirations within the series;
  • Dragon Ball as a cultural phenomenon; and
  • English language adaptation of the metaseries.

While not specifically part of the project (as such articles are not focused on Dragon Ball), the following topics should be looked into as well:

  • Cast, crew, distribution companies, production companies of Dragon Ball related items.

Our scope does not include:

  • Fanfiction and fan culture;
  • Dōjinshi;
  • Any other form of speculation; and
  • Works with only a passing reference to Dragon Ball.

[edit] Article structure

For each page type, we have a "template" article. These articles should be the focus of structural improvements, which can then be imitated in other articles of the same type. Many articles are far too long and there is no over arching style. They also come under criticism for being "In-Universe". anything that can be written about from a real-world perspective should be written that way.

To repeat: All information should be based on the original versions.

  • Character lists - characters with too little information (Bubbles, Lime) to warrant a full page should be in a single list page (as opposed to the several we have now). Instead of the dozen list pages we have now, we should consolidate every character into one list. The list page should separate characters by species, then alphabetically. The list should not be broken up based on manga-only characters, anime-only characters, movie-only characters, etc. Each entry should give a brief recap of their involvement in the series, character traits, explanation of their name pun, as well as a quick note as to which media they appear in.
  • Character pages - main characters, and any other character with enough information, should receive their own page. Each page should give a brief (three paragraphs maximum) recap of their involvement in the entire series, describe character traits, talk about the character's techniques, transformations, and the like, as well as a separate section detailing the character's name pun (original pun word, kana changes, possible romanizations, etc). Any out of universe information that can be found should be added as well.
  • Episode/arc pages - each story arc in Dragon Ball Z at least will be split into 4 pages. Dragon Ball GT is most likely to be merged into Dragon Ball GT (plot).
  • Movies - each feature film should have its own page.
  • Dragon Ball media - a separate page (preferably more than a list) detailing the release structure of the manga (Jump, tankoban, kanzenban), anime, movies, sup. books, video games, music compilations, etc. Page should be rather short, detailed information can be split off to separate pages.
  • Video game pages - only Dragon Ball-related video games with enough information to warrant separate articles should have their own articles. Games that do not differ much from one another with in a series should be merged into one article. For example, see Dragon Ball: Budokai Tenkaichi (series).
  • Supplemental books - there should be a page detailing the daizenshuu, world guides, landmark, and other supplemental books.
  • Template - the templates seen on the Dragon Ball pages now, while good, are too large and there should only be one, not two (or three). One bottom template needs to be consolidated for the whole metaseries.
  • English adaptations - there should be a separate and distinct page detailing the different English adaptations of Dragon Ball. Including which company distributed where, when, differences from the Japanese version, censorship issues, etc.
  • "Other" - pages beyond these types of pages will probably be unique.
