In his semifinal bout, he defeated George Sotiropoulos by KO in the first round, advancing him into the finals on December 8, 2007, to face fellow Team Hughes member Mac Danzig. Speer fought Danzig at The Ultimate Finale: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra, and lost by rear naked choke at 2:01 of the first round.

On April 2, 2008 at UFC Fight Night 13, Speer lost to Anthony Johnson by knockout. Speer was then released from his UFC contract. Speer later signed with the WEC, which is owned by the UFC's parent company, Zuffa.
