"The Genesis" is the first song on Nas' debut album Illmatic. It begins with the sound of subway trains before a sample of Main Source's "Live at the Barbeque" plays. The specific sample features Nas delivering the first six lines of his music career. Once that sample ends, a sampled dialogue from the 1982 film Wild Style plays. As Hector and Zoro, two characters from Wild Style converse, a sample from the song "Subway Theme" by Grand Wizard Theodore and Chris Stein is used.[1][2] This song was featured in Wild Style and earned Fab Five Freddy a writing credit for "The Genesis." Over the beat of "Subway Theme," Nas, his brother Jungle, and fellow young rapper AZ converse. They discuss the "bullshit on the radio" as well as money counting and cannabis smoking in order to set the stage for the rest of the album.
The song credits no producer, but the Illmatic liner notes claim that it was "conceived by Nas and Faith N."
