False vandalism warnings on this page

The vandalism warnings left on this page by User:YCV2007 were quite unjustified.[1] Tyrenius 23:33, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Tyrenius. Stu ’Bout ye! 08:42, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Discussion you might be interested in

Well not a discussion as yet due to the lack of replies, but see here. Please note that I'm not trying to whitewash any IRA involvement, merely make a broader point that whether potentially defamatory allegations where the person has no legal redress should be included simply because they are a matter of public record and can therefore be sourced. One Night In Hackney303 13:50, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Do you want to take a look at La Mon restaurant bombing and see if that's acceptable? I thought it best to clarify the political position of Iris Robinson, and I've removed the claim that the police were certain Adams carried out the attack, due to lack of corroboration. If you want to put that back in with a clarification that the PSNI haven't made any public statement to that effect I've got no problem with that though. Thanks. One Night In Hackney303 20:36, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, spot on. Stu ’Bout ye! 07:31, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

misuse of flag templates

I just seen your comment for me on the page, you want clarification, I'am not sure what you want me to provide, but for instance Template:Northern Ireland cities would you you regard that as proper use of a flag that has no status. There seems to be a overuse of flags on wikipedia, they add nothing to templates.--padraig3uk 10:38, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Padraig. I have no problem at all with removing the Ulster Banner from the Template:Northern Ireland cities or similar ones. There's no real need to have a flag in any of these templates, whether they relate to NI or other countries.
But with ones like Template:British Isles or Template:UKFlags the flag should remain for consistancy/tidyness and my reasons given on the WikiProject Flag Template. Would that be anywhere near a comprimise you would be willing to accept? ie, on templates the Ulster Banner should be used only where other country's (eg England, Wales and Scotland's) flags are used. Stu ’Bout ye! 11:03, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
I have no problem with its use in Template:UKFlags as its used in its proper context, in the Template:British Isles I have a number of problems with the actual layout of that template, and besides that I don't think the use of the flag in that context is correct as it refers to the British Isles of today, so I think the flag should not be used. I have removed the Ulster Banner from templates on railways amongst others, Then you have the likes of this Template:Lists of Marilyns, some editors seem to love putting flags on everything.--padraig3uk 11:17, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Images & copyright

You might have noticed the message I got on my talk page about the Ian Adamson image. I had a look and found another image on a gov.uk page, and was wondering if you knew the score about copying an image from there and using it for WP. What's the policy regarding use of British govt images? As far as I remember, using American govt images is considered fair. Cheers. --Mal 11:34, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Crown copyright images older than 50 years can be used freely. If they are not as old as that, you can use the {{crowncopyright}} tag, but you'll need a {{Fair use in|Article}} tag too. You'll also need to state the source. If you have these two tags, the source, and a rationale (eg (this image is being used for informational purposes ..... etc) then it should be alright. However it may, and I think probably will, be deemed replaceable. Tricky. Stu ’Bout ye! 11:56, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
And yes, most American government images seem to be free. Well NASA and military ones anyway. Stu ’Bout ye! 11:58, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
Cheers Stu. I'll consider replacing the Adamson picture then maybe. *shrugs* lol By the way...

Well its a long time in coming! I see you've snagged another one too. :)
Question for you - did you upload the Orangemen photo? It was vandalised recently... though the original had been deleted before the newer, sectarian image was uploaded. OK - I got distracted mid-edit here. The admin who dealt with the abuse has explained where you got the image from. I guess I'll look through my hard drive to see if I ever captured pics of actual Orangemen instead of just bandsmen! --Mal 21:17, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Stu you have taken and uploaded pictures for Wikipedia haven't you? I made a page for photographs and images specific to NI off the NI Wikiproject page, if you want to bother adding them to the page. Cheers. --Mal 14:30, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Once I get a decent digital camera I intend to start uploading my own, but most of the ones I've uploaded come from Flickr. Good work on the Northern Ireland tasks template, some shocking ommissions there. Will try and start some of those articles. Stu ’Bout ye! 14:35, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Yeah - I plan to keep that updated a bit more regularly - that's what was causing the problem you described (User:Kingboyk worked that one out). Of course real life™ might get in the way, but that's my intention! Handy to have it on the talk pages of tagged project articles too I think. --Mal 07:44, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Your deletion of 2 articles

Big hullabaloo about notability? Well I have some news clippings here beside me about those two bands. What happened to your floated idea about making a flute band article ? Fluffy999 18:41, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

If you feel they were inappropriately deleted you can make a case at Wikipedia:Deletion review. Yeah, a general article about flute bands is a good idea I think. Stu ’Bout ye! 07:45, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
I didn't ask what you think. Look up and re-read the question. Fluffy999 20:35, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

CSD

Hi, I deleted your recent article because it did not provide independent verifiable sources that it meets the notability guidelines. Best to add refs and notability before copying from your word processor, esp as potentially libellous without sources. I couldn't have deleted unsaved edits, but if you want to work on the text it was Alexander Robinson (c. 1902 - died 1993) was variously a criminal, reserve policeman, Ulster Volunteer and streetfighter who has gained an infamous reputation in Belfast. Robinson is better known by his nickname, Buck Alec. He was born in the Sailortown area of Belfast, ireland (now Northern Ireland and spent most of his life in the York Street area. Jimfbleak. Sockpuppets

You don't have to fill out Form 19283A when they're that obvious, and it's fine to bring new socks to the attention of someone who dealt with previous ones. Seraphimblade Talk to me 09:08, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Possible addition to the NI or Belfast task list..?

Titti Von Tramp. Ever heard of this person Stu? I personally haven't until today, but I was wondering if they might be notable enough to include an article about them - pretty much a rarity in Northern Ireland I'd have thought (though I could be wrong!) - that in itself might make them notable. Has links with (is a regular of?) the Kremlin (bar) apparently. --Mal 23:55, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah heard of her. Think she works in Yello (the old Parliament) and the Potthouse too. But not sure she's notable enough! Stu ’Bout ye! 08:37, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
Is there an article for the Parliament .. Yello.. or whatever? Should there be? I remember the Parliament would probably be notable (at least to me) as Belfast's gay bar. I'm guessing its older (as a gay bar) than the Kremlin, and so it would have been notable as being Belfast's (NI's) only(?) known gay pub..? I dunno .. I'm not too familiar with this area tbh! Not that I'm trying to imply you might be! lol --Mal 16:02, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Hey you! The Parliament probably was NI's first gay bar, but think notability is still borderline. Stu ’Bout ye! 07:49, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

The Crows Nest on skipper st is acually the OLDEST gaybar in Belfast. Followed by the Parliament then Kremlin, The pArliament was chaged to KUbe and now its Mynt - but always been a gay bar appart for a 9 mths period. Yes, Titti works in MYnt/yello along with Sophonda Phrox and trudi Scrumptious.

Stu. Can you reply to my comments at Template_talk:Ireland-politician-stub? Also, "an" is the preferred form of the indefinite article when it precedes a vowel.

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Cabin Hill Crest.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Cabin Hill Crest.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. British Identity in NI

Stu, could you take a look at my addition (last night) to the Briton article ("In Ireland"). I want to add more specifically about the Republic - the current bits are indented as historical, pre-partition, all-island-ish, but are blurred for obvious reasons - but, I'd also like to add more about British identity in Northern Ireland. This is probably best put in the "In the United Kingdom" section, but I'm not sure where to start (or how to approach it appropriately). Any pointers or suggestions? Could you look through the "In Ireland" section and give your opinion?

(Happy belated birthday, by the way. I see you're a 78-er like myself!) --sony-youthpléigh 08:57, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Another person staring 30 in the face then! That's balanced, accurate and well sourced, don't think I've much to add. By coincidence, BBC Northern Ireland screened a documentary this week about the attitudes of children in NI. Lagest survey of its kind apparently. Link. Maybe worth adding? That link only gives some of the results, it's covered here as well. That article talks about Northern Irish identity as well. Stu ’Bout ye! 10:03, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Stanley Leisure

Isn't this the correct name of the organisation that owned all those Stanley betting shops there used to be? I read somewhere recently during a Google search that the owner had to move from Belfast to the mainland as he refused to pay protection money to the IRA or unspecified Loyalists.

I've added it to the NI tasks list anyway. I'm not trying to imply that you're a gambling man by the way! --Mal 00:05, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Maybe Leonard Steinberg or Lord Steinberg instead? Stu ’Bout ye! 08:07, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

3 Revert rule

I have reported the incident here,[2]. The first time I have ever had to do this, did not like it one bit. --Domer48 10:38, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Fair enough, I have replied on the 3RR page. I would have preferred that you follow the correct procedure and take it up at CFD rather than reverting, but whatever. Stu ’Bout ye! 10:55, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
You have been blocked from editing for a period of 12 hours in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for violating the three-revert rule on Tom Williams (Irish Republican). In the future, please solve editing disputes through discussion rather than edit warring. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 11:19, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Heimstern Läufer (talk) 11:19, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

This blocked user (block log | autoblocks | rangeblocks | unblock | contribs | deleted contribs) has asked to be unblocked, but an administrator has reviewed and declined this request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock request while you are blocked.

Request reason: "My explantions at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RR# and Talk:Tom Williams (Irish Republican) should be sufficient enough to explain why this block is completely unwarranted. Yes I reverted more than three times, but I was ignoring that rule as the correct procedure would have been Domer48 and Brixton Busters to take it up at WP:CFD. Changing Category:Northern Irish Roman Catholics to Category:Irish Roman Catholics is in violation of the UK categorisation structure, is misleading and I believe is disrupting Wikipedia to prove a point. Please note I was not edit warring and had discussed the issue fully on the talk page and pointed out the correct procedure for Domer48 and Brixton Busters to follow, which they ignored."

Decline reason: "I'm sorry but edit warring is an absolute no-no here as it causes all sorts of trouble. Being "right" is no defence, however frustrating that can be. I have, however messaged the blocking admin asking if they will consider shortening the block if you guarantee not to do it again. Failing that, sit out your block and learn from it. Sorry. — John 15:40, 13 July 2007 (UTC)"

Please make any further unblock requests by using the {{unblock}} template. However, abuse of the template may result in your talk page being protected.

I also feel the block implemented incredibly quickly, why not discuss first? Either here or on the 3RR page? Stu ’Bout ye! 11:47, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Unblock review

John, do you disagree that the correct procedure for Domer and BB would have been to list the category (and every other NI biography cat) at CFD? And that by changing the cat they were being misleading? Stu ’Bout ye! 16:01, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I do. I have warned both of them recently for problematic behaviour. --John 16:08, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, to clarify - do you agree or disagree? Stu ’Bout ye! 16:58, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes I do agree with you on the content issue. Sorry if I wasn't clear the first time.--John 16:59, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that. And for consistancy, shouldn't BB be blocked for edit warring? Not having a go at you John, but I still think this block is absolutely ridiculous - breaking 3RR should not mean an automatic block. Each case should be reviewed individually, and to quote WP:IAR, if you are "improving or maintaining the project" 3RR can be ignored. I also see Domer has reverted again on the article with the summary "See discussion", which is laughable. I'm not happy with the article staying like that, would you mind posting on WT:IWNB about it to see if anyone agrees with me. Stu ’Bout ye! 17:08, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
That was why I warned BB. I have already warned Domer recently for edit-warring. Let me have a look at the most recent instance you describe. Do you see that your repeated reversions were a contravention of policy? --John 17:25, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

In the strictest interpretation of it yes. Stu ’Bout ye! 17:47, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Will you promise not to repeat this behaviour if I unblock you? --John 18:02, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
I'll certainly not make more than three reverts again. But if a similar situation occured again, where other editors make these kind of changes (which I believe are intentionally misleading, in violation of WP:POINT and tatamount to vandalism) I will revert. I will of course discuss, as I did on this occasion. I guess that's a yes and no answer, so I'm happy enough for the ban to run its course. Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I'm sure you've more productive things you could be doing. Stu ’Bout ye! 18:46, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
No problem. Maybe the next time you could ask me (or any admin really) for help and support first before letting it get to this stage. Best wishes to you, --John 18:52, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

POW's

Hi Stubacca, just on something you said on the discussion on POW's, "But no state of actual war existed ," what is your view on this, released under the Freedom of Information Act. http://www.patfinucanecentre.org/misc/opbanner.pdf . "The longest military campaign in British History." Take it handy --Domer48 21:58, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm completely lost with this debate at the minute to be honest, haven't caught up on the half dozen other conversations that were happening simultaneously with the IWNB one. Stu ’Bout ye! 11:38, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
I read it and it is interesting if it is genuine. However fail to see its relevance to the POW question. --John 13:21, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Six County Flags Issue

Your comment "...as an "other" flag which has never had any official status in NI, and therefore should be less prominant." is quite degrading. It has a prominent status albeit less prominent than the union flag, but moving it down to other flags is regressive. Diarmaid 12:43, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

It's not degrading at all, its fact. It has never had any official status and does not represent NI in any way. Stu ’Bout ye! 13:12, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Just because a flag does not have official status does not mean that it does not represent something or some people and their beliefs. The use of the tricolor has no official status in Northern Ireland, yet it is used by some people there. In South Armagh the tricolor is used as a symbol of people's beliefs and aspirations. I agree that the "other" flag does not represent NI, or the whole of the people of NI, however it does represent a large proportion of the people of NI. There is a story to tell in the article, and I feel that some people are stopping it from being told. --Dumbo1 14:57, 17 August 2007 (UTC) Ok, had a look at the articles, and I do think the issue has been covered, so forget my comment above. --Dumbo1 15:00, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Omagh bombing

Looks better thank you. My original reason was the sentence "Several warnings mentioned that the bomb was 200 yards away" when only one warning quoted had any mention of a distance. Is it possible to establish further context on the distance at all? What I mean is saying one warning was 200m away and the bomb actually 300-400m away doesn't mean much without information about how close those two points are to each other. It's quite possible (though unlikely given the circumstances) for them to be up to 600m apart. Brixton Busters 11:40, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

I will leave it up to you, you have a lot more experience than I do just thought it would be easier to expand with the lay out I did. BigDunc 11:30, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I removed the section headers as it is such a short article at present. These can obviously be added back in once it is expanded. I also removed a bit of trivial information, the names of his family etc. There were also some minor grammatical changes and formatting.
The article needs expanding to make its importance clear, and needs more referencing. These links might help: [3] [4] [5] although they're most about the 2005 bombs. Here's sone about his funeral: [6] [7]. Stu ’Bout ye! 11:56, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Category:People killed by UVF

I was planning to db-empty this in a few days if you've no objections? I don't think there's enough articles merited for a specific category for it, just the umbrella "loyalist paramilitaries" is enough I think? One Night In Hackney303 08:05, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, no objections to that. Presumably the cat was populated at some point, but no point keeping it when it is empty. Stu ’Bout ye! 08:16, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
It did have Capagh killings (which I've prodded anyway) and Miami Showband killings in it, neither of which were articles about "people" per se and I remember the lengthy disagreements when the "People killed by the Provisional IRA" were removed from the "opposing" articles so thought it best to make everything consistent and keep "people" categories for biographical articles rather than ones about incidents. One Night In Hackney303 08:20, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Never seen that Capagh article before. It probably could be expanded and kept, but way too much work. The UVF article doesn't mention the event. So the contents could probably be merged to it. Stu ’Bout ye! 08:28, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
I guess it depends on your perspective. I tend to think articles are merited if there's something more than just a brief news article, and I'm not aware of that much that can be written about Cappagh, that couldn't be covered in The Troubles in Cappagh or elsewhere. Although it isn't mentioned in the article right now, for example the Warrington bomb attacks did increase efforts to find a solution, similarly with the Omagh bombing that was a pivotal moment in the peace process which really needs covering in more detail rather than just the events of the day. One Night In Hackney303 08:40, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Just noticed the Cappagh killings article is completely unsourced, and full of "more than likely"s. I'll expand the UVF and Troubles in .... articles, and source them. After that I would say a redirect to either of the articles, rather than prodding? Stu ’Bout ye! 10:05, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Up to you. The article is spelt incorrectly anyway, and the correct title isn't particularly widespread. One Night In Hackney303 10:19, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

You agreed to the consensus made on the 'Volunteer' mediation discussion earlier this year here. However, some editors believe that a new consensus has been established where "IRA volunteer" is used without the initial mention of "IRA member". Although no discussion has taken place, they feel that because articles were changed from the format of "IRA member (volunteer)" to simply "IRA volunteer" and were not subsequently reverted for several months (until noticed by myself and another user), that this therefore establishes it as the new consensus and that the mediation ruling is now defunct. You can see discussions of this here, here, here. As a party involved in this discussion previously, your commentis valuable, and so it would be apprreciated if you could make any comment you might have here if you have one. Regards.
