[edit] Career
[edit] Tottenham Hotspur
The first team Stephen played for was Tottenham Hotspur, for whom he made his debut against Manchester United on August 10, 1997, a match Tottenham lost 0–2. His season was cut much shorter by a four-day spell in February, during which time Clemence picked up a red card against Barnsley and an injury in the following match against Blackburn Rovers.
He involved himself to a greater degree the following season, displaying more of the form which won him a place in the England U21 side, but made only one appearance.
[edit] Birmingham City
Injury during the 2001–02 season meant he didn't play until April, and, when the transfer window opened in January 2003, he found himself on his way to Birmingham City for a fee of £250,000. Injury struck again in the 2003–04 season, meaning that once again he had to sit several games out, however, he finished the season by making his 50th appearance for the club.
During 2004–05 and into 2005–06 Clemence remained an important member of the first team squad at Birmingham, helping the club win promotion back to the Premier League in 2006–07.
[edit] Leicester City
On July 13, 2007, Clemence signed a three-year contact with Leicester City for an initial £750,000, in a deal which could be worth £1,000,000.[1] Stephen was named the new club captain by then manager Martin Allen on July 28, [2] and was picked by the BBC as Leicester City's key player for the 2007/08 season.
Clemence scored his first competitive goal for Leicester in a 3–2 win against Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup on September 18.[3] He has thrice been named in the Championship Team of the Week this season.[4][5][6]
On December 11, Clemence expressed his furiosity with referee Phil Joslin after he wrongfully sent off teammate Patrick Kisnorbo in a 3–1 defeat to Ipswich.[7] Video replays showed that Kisnorbo had actually won the ball from a tackle, which a linesman ruled out for a foul. Although Joslin did not apologize, he admitted his mistake by lifting the ban.[8] Leicester were however fined £3,000 on 21st February 2008 for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.[9]
Clemence scored his first league goal in a 1–1 draw against Charlton Athletic on 29th December,[10] and his second against Norwich City on 16th February 2008 as Leicester won 4–0.[11] Clemence suffered an injury about a week prior to the end of the season as Leicester were relegated to League One.
