[edit] busy man,

I noticed your edits on an article I frequent.
I'd like to have a discussion with you on a number of topics, when you think you'll have the time:

  • One is the habitibility of Gliese 581 c,
  • another is the critique of Stargen at my userspace,
  • another is making something better than Stargen,
  • another is the deletion of the article Planetary human habitability,
  • etc.

I am sorry, I have been out of touch with this field for a pretty long time. So, I do not think I can be of much help. Still, if you have some specific queries, feel free. --soum talk 09:32, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hey

Sorry about that... Any ideas on how to make the "slice" look nicer? — Alex Khristov 07:21, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I am sorry I didn't realize it was you. How's everything going on?
And I have no idea how to make the Slice look any different in the favorites bar than it is in the article itself. And I have even lesser ideas about making things look better; I only know when they don't. :-P --soum talk 07:36, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, it's too soon to say, but there's a chance that things might get back to normal. I was trying to test out the web slice but noticed that it didn't work, so I went back to revert myself, but you beat me to it. By the way, check your email. :-) — Alex Khristov 08:03, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hi

Hi. I was very disappointed to find Alizee married, so out of frustration added a citation tag to it! ;-)

I see that you are proficient in Haskell....I never went close enough to understanding that language!:(

P.S-How does it feel to be famous?

And Yes, pretty impressive answers in your RfA. [1] Tell me something, when I sign off using 4 tilde's and I want to have a different signature from the default one, how do I go about it? Or do I have to use the required wiki tags every time I want to do that? Thanks in advance. CSumit (talk) 17:38, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Dont worry,a few more newspaper reports and you will be inundated by requests for interviews and et al! Thanks for the customised signature info. And nice pic!--CSumit Talk 09:39, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Yep, I stay in Durgapur. Today had the last exam, Computer Science, was a breeze! Actually I studied in a CBSE school, nt a govt school. Are you still a student? You seem to know a lot about Microsoft products (mostly wont be of any use to me!). Have you ever used LINUX? If yes, which one would you prefer, a LINUX installation or a WINDOWS version (and reasons please)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by CSumit (talkcontribs) 10:22, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm more into software development. Well, reverse engineering actually, seeing that I havent actually developed any software except a couple of lame ones for my school project (database management system last year and text editor this year).

Your point about insufficient documentation of a large number of OSS is correct, but then there are many useful OSS having excellent documentation. It is very tedious to go through IDA analyses of closed softwares to discover flaws in them, so in that respect OSS are better because it is easier to understand the code written in English rather than backtracking from the disassembly; then improve that vulnerability or exploit it! ;-P About the POV of OSS-favours, it seems sometimes people just vent their frustration/anger towards Microsoft in WP articles, which is a deplorable mentality and you do the correct thing in regularly monitoring MS articles. I didnt know about microkenels, thanks for pointing out about them, maybe I'll start researching them....just to improve my OS knowledge. I'll turn to you if I have any problems though and I hope you wont mind! And yes, Ubuntu rules!! --CSumit Talk 11:01, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Windows Server 2008

Thanks for correcting the license issue for me. I'm really confused with Wikipedia's license templates (although I've been using it for quite a while). The screenshot is reduced from 1600 * 1200 w/ Bicubic Sharp. At full resolution (1024 * 768) the text part seems pretty clear. Do you suggest me uploading a higher resolution version? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jim.Liu (talkcontribs) 10:55, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. I've retaken and re-uploaded the screenshot. Feel free to let me know if it can be further improved. (Jim Liu (talk) 11:20, 31 March 2008 (UTC))

[edit] Powertoy Calculator

I was looking at this article, and I realized that my installation of the Powertoy Calculator does not look like the one pictured in the article, and my installation lacks the full range of graphical functionality the version you are writing about seems to have. I am mystified as to what I have done wrong. I just deleted it and reinstalled it from the Microsoft website and nothing changed. Since Microsoft does not support this, am I out of luck? --Filll (talk) 12:11, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Your edits on the Microsoft Windows template have been reverted. One of the reasons, it was a mess and it was false. Windows 2000 was not a server client and many other listed OS were wrong. I suggest keeping the template as it is now to avoid extreme controversy over it. // A Raider Like Indiana 21:21, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey Soum, I invited User:A Raider Like Indiana to join the discussion on Template talk:Microsoft Windows family so we can figure out what to do with the template. I think you're both right in what you want to do, but I'm of the opinion that it's the articles themselves that are a mess, not the template. Let's try to sort this out and find the right thing to do with the articles, and then what we need to do with the template will become clear.... -/- Warren 19:36, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Windows XP editions... i merged together the two 64-bit edition, tablet pc edition, and media center edition articles, merged in some information from the main Windows XP article, and that's the result so far. There's obviously a bunch more that can be done, but I figured you should have a look at it and see if this makes more sense to you. I'm thinking there still needs to be more written about the Home edition so that it can have its own section distict from Professional... anyways, let me know what you think. -/- Warren 23:06, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Folder synchronization, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Folder synchronization has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

[edit] Trivia edits

Apologies on the trivia edits. I haven't done those recently, and instead have created stubbed articles instead of inserting possible trivia-type edits into existing articles. Regarding the list you pointed me to, I was the one that created the list and originally inserted the trivia-type information into existing articles because when I created stubbed articles for that list, some were speedily deleted. However, I've added more information to those articles and they have survived now, so I have continued to do that instead. Gary King (talk) 02:47, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

I had made this edit and got this response and this response to that edit, which is why I briefly continued this practice. I haven't done it anymore, though, and don't intend to. Gary King (talk) 03:11, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Windows Vista Embedded

I've been wondering about that too, but I think our answer might be here... -/- Warren 05:19, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

So how do we proceed? Make Windows Embedded article, and make Windows Embedded Compact (renamed from Windows Embedded CE), Windows Embedded Standard (containing NT4e, XPe and info about Vistae/7e), Windows Embedded Enterprise (XP for Embedded, Vista for Embedded) and Windows Embedded PileOfShit (sorry POSReady :-P) sub articles of it? --soum talk 05:49, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
You probably noticed that I didn't merge XP Embedded (or WinFLP) into the XP Editions article... this is because I really didn't know how we should handle this, but I think it's becoming a bit clearer now that we have some new information.
We have NT 4.0 Embedded (an "edition" of NT 4.0, I think it can be argued), and we have XP Embedded (an "edition" of XP), and we have Embedded CE 6.0 (a "version" of CE). I think what we need to do is have the "Windows CE" article continue to track all the versions of this kernel, and then use it to describe all the operating system releases built on that kernel (Windows Embedded CE 6.0 and Windows Embedded Compact being the current & next ones). We have the editions of Windows Vista for Embedded Systems... I would argue that all of those editions (Enterprise and Business) actually belong in Windows Vista editions, because it really is the same OS and editions as Vista itself (see here).
Someone already made Embedded Windows a while back, which is a disambiguation page (and should be renamed to Windows Embedded, but you'll need to do that with your magical powers), and there is Windows Embedded for Point of Service as well, which could contain information about the current release, as well as anything about the upcoming release (which according to the Ars article isn't until next year anyways). This page breaks down the Embedded brand into the four food groups: CE, XP, POS, and Vista... that should be our guide. The "Product-Device Comparison Chart" can probably help with writing lead sections, too.
Man, this gives me a headache. If Microsoft backed off on the "POSReady" moniker, this all does kinda make sense, if we think of "Embedded" as editions of existing operating systems. -/- Warren 06:16, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 2008 IPL Results table

Hi Soumyasch, I have just been playing around with the "Standings" table on the 2008 IPL page, trying to get the Royal Challengers Bangalore box in the left-hand column to look nice. I managed to achieve this, which gives you an idea of what I was aiming for. Unfortunately I don't know that much about coding tables, so I was unable to make it better. Maybe you (if you feel like it) could try to fix it properly.

Thanks, Juwe (talk) 14:14, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I am sorry I am unable to see what you were trying to achieve. I do not see much of a difference between this and an older revision like this. Are you trying to reduce the width of the column? Or trying to wrap the RCB listing over to a second line? If you can explain it I will probably be of more help. --soum talk 17:41, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] IPL Result template: abandoned matches

Hi Soum, I just tried to alter Template:IPL Result in order to link "Match abandoned" to the relevant match, but made a terrible mess of it and so had to revert instantly. Considering that I am not too proficient at coding, maybe you could fix this up. You could also do the same for "draw" as the winner, even though there are no draws in IPL. I suppose you might be thinking that this template could be applied more widely, in which case adding "tie" might be an idea.

Thanks, Juwe (talk) 00:45, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Actually, don't worry. I seem to have figured it out after all :-) Juwe (talk) 05:49, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
OK, I have implemented the changes I mentioned including adding "tie" as a possible "winner". Considering the template's potential to be used for any competition, I suggest renaming it "Cricket Match Result" (or something similar). What do you think? Juwe (talk) 06:45, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
I am sorry I didn't have the foresight to do this back when I created the template. Nor document the table code enough to make it easier for other editors to hack into it. I am really sorry. I was not at home since last night, so couldn't respond earlier.
I created the template as a stop gap measure to ease filling up the table. As you find out last night, nothing but the home and away uses has been tested. We need to test it on real-world scenarios before its use can be spread out.
Sampling randomly through a few cricket tournament articles, I do not see there is any commonly accepted standard format. The 2008 IPL article does serve a pretty good reference to standardize on. May be its time to shake up Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket. If it does get standardized, things will get a lot more streamlined (such as match numbers can be set in the {{Limited Overs Matches}} template itself rather than th hack job done using {{anchor}}. --soum talk 12:59, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Don't worry about it. The only reason I screwed it up in the first place was that I didn't have enough knowledge of the code, so i just tried to work out what I thought it must mean. When I came back to the problem, all it took was 5 minutes of searching and I found out what the parts of the code actually did, so it isn't really that convoluted. I did do some testing of the alterations I made, just by editing code in the table in 2008 IPL and previewing (both for linked and unlinked text), and it all seemed to be fine.
As far as other cricket tournament articles go, from my searching I have found that the only articles for domestic cricket tournaments that look any good (apart from 2008 IPL) seem to be the Australian State competition pages for the 2007-08 season (eg Pura Cup season 2007-08). Very few individual season domestic competition pages actually exist, and of the few that do exist most don't present very well at all (eg Frizzell County Championship Division One in 2005). Basically, the 2008 IPL page is far and away the best such article yet created.
Thinking about it now, the template as it stands would only be appropriate for domestic cricket competitions (due to the home and away format). If it was adapted to international tournaments (such as in the results table here: 2007 Cricket World Cup#Super 8 stage), there would need to be colours for each country being the winner. However, this could be easily achieved. I agree with shaking up WP:CRIC and with the 2008 IPL page containing many features which could be used as standards, and you also make a good point about streamlining and the use of anchors.
Juwe (talk) 19:24, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Just another minor point: maybe "Match abandoned" should be changed to "No result" as this is what the actual "result" of the match is, and this would tie in better with things like the "League Progression" table of 2008 IPL
Juwe (talk) 01:33, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
I think "no result" is a bit ambiguous. While a draw/tie is technically a "result", in common lingo, it can also pass as being "no result". That said, I have made some changes to the way it is listed.
I would say we should first focus on the 2008 IPL article first, before attempting to standardize this format. There are still something that can be added to it. The article is currently lacking in prose. A section describing the tournament may be added. Separate section dealing with how it was received - both by audiences as well as crickers - would probably make sense. Considering it will be over in less than a week, if we could add the sections by then, it could end up being an FA in the first week of June itself. --soum talk 13:43, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
I like what you have done with the "Abandoned" result. You are probably right about focussing on the IPL article first. Like you say, it is lacking in prose and those 2 sections are what the article really needs. Also, if we could get the prose sections written, there would be suitable places to add in some pictures (assuming we can find some good pictures to use). Maybe a good photo to use would be the winning captain holding up the trophy, but obviously such a picture isn't available yet. In all other respects the article is excellent though. Juwe (talk) 15:52, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
I have a few friends in Mumbai who will be going to see the finals. I will ask them if they can take a picture (and pray that they take a good enough shot :-P). --soum talk 15:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
That sounds good. After reading the "media restrictions" section of this I was a bit concerned about the use of IPL match images on wikipedia, but after seeing this article I don't think there will be any problems. I will edit the IPL page to include this reference. It would be good to have a couple of photos from other important moments as well, eg one like this (due to it being the tournament's first match and highest individual innings) or maybe a picture of Mishra's hat-trick, but this might be just wishful thinking. Juwe (talk) 03:15, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] F#

I undid your moving of the F Sharp article to F♯. In trying to work around a technical limitation, you introduced factual errors. The language name is not F♯ but F# (i.e., it does not contain the musical ♯ sign but the hash # sign). It is similar to C#, which also is never written as C♯. Plus the ♯ symbol is not on the keyboard, and that would make linking directly to the article by hand a major pain. Renaming a page to use the most common name is fine but renaming to something that is never used, incorrect and harder to use is not. --soum talk 03:58, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

OK. I thought F♯ was a good way to get around the limitation, since the language is called "F Sharp" and the sharp sign looks very similar. But I'm not going to be heartbroken if others disagree. —Remember the dot (talk) 04:02, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Banging my head against a brickwall...

Hi Soum, I was wondering if you could have a look at this "discussion" I have attempted to have with another editor. Unfortunately, he seems not to understand that if you make an honest mistake, you don't have to stick your mistaken position despite all rational arguments (and evidence) to the contrary. Maybe you might be able to convince him that it is not simply wild speculation that there will be an IPL season next year. The discussion speaks for itself: Talk:2009 Indian Premier League#Proposed deletion. Thanks (and Sorry) Juwe (talk) 19:14, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

As you can glean from the discussion, it seems he has just done this: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2009 Indian Premier League Juwe (talk) 19:19, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Hi Soum,
LeaveSleaves (talk) clearly has learnt nothing judging from his latest reply here (Talk:2009 Indian Premier League#Proposed deletion) and I would appreciate it if you would say something. I don't want to make a big fuss over any particular issue, but if LeaveSleaves isn't put on notice about how to be productive in debates then I fear many, many more wasted hours in the future. Thanks Juwe (talk) 13:15, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Actually Soum, on reflection it is probably unfair to ask you to jump in the middle of this (unless you want to, that is). I will instead seek the assistance of and admin who regularly deals with dispute resolution. Once again, I do not care about the specific issue, as that appears to have been resolved, but I do care about LeaveSleaves' behaviour and feel it needs to be severely moderated to avoid future situations like the 2 I have already had to endure. All the best anyway, Juwe (talk) 14:50, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] External links

This IP is on a rampage adding external links several Microsoft articles. The website is not notable, the information is nothing spectacularly special than Microsoft.com and the pages contain ads as well. Are such links allowed? Also, he/she does not seem to provide an edit summary for any of his/her edits. - xpclient Talk 11:31, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

No. This is a classic spam link. In cases you might come across in the future, just warn the user for spamming and if it does not stop report at WP:AIV. --soum talk 01:25, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:SQLServer2008Logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:SQLServer2008Logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:14, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Impartiality Required

I saw some of your input on the editor dispute page and I had a few general questions. 1) How does an editor that requests administrative assistence know if anyone is "on the case"? 2) Does an editor's request just sit in limbo, waiting for a response, or is there an expiration date? 3) Other than changing my username, etc (which I would rather Not do) is there anyway to prevent retaliation? 4) Does the term "repeat offender" have any power in WikiWorld?

The editing war in question has died down over the past few days and the stalker has "left the building". I am drafting a letter of consilience to the other editor and I feel we can move beyond our disagreement---I even envision a working relationship for future editing. So, these are just "I was wondering ....." kinds of questions. A response would be greatly appreciated.--Buster7 (talk) 18:47, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the speedy response. No, You were not involved in my situation, mine is #41---Stalker. As far as I can tell, no-one is involved: which may be a good thing. Iblardi has re-evaluated and is no longer stalking me. As I said I will "reach-out" to him in hopes of future good will and common good-faith editing. I AM concerned that his first response to a disagreement is stalking. But, perhaps I can coumcil him in that regard. This may sound funny and a little off topic but in the city where I live, Chicago (IL), who you know is important. I guess that is at the heart of why I'm eager to "know' an administrator. Or, maybe it is that I want them to notice me. Anyway, thanks for your time--Buster7 (talk) 19:28, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Spill in aisle 7"

Hey Soum..I know we just met but can you help me clean up a mess I made. In the article "W.E.B.Du Bois I somehow jumbled all the references together and I don't know how to fix it. Both ref #14 and #15 are from the same book, just different pages. Those are the two that I did just now. It was my first attempt at "blockquote"...thats how it got messed up. I'm afraid I'll loose other editors stuff or at least make even a worse mess. thanks a WikiBunch...--Buster7 (talk) 05:47, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Thank you or as we say in Flemish..."bedankt"...--Buster7 (talk) 20:31, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
