"Sleeping Sun" is a power ballad by the Finnish symphonic power metal quintet Nightwish. The song was originally written by Tuomas Holopainen and dedicated to the solar eclipse that arose on the European sky in 1999. This version was released on CD and DVD Single in late October/early November 2005.

[edit] Second release
In 2005, Nightwish announced that they were busy recording a new compilation album, entitled Highest Hopes. "Sleeping Sun" would also appear on this album, however not in the original state. The new version released as a single, with the full new version, the radio edited new version, and the original version.
The band also made a video for the new version. This time around, the video is not intime like the original one was. Rather than showing Tarja against a background showing Finland's landscapes; we're seeing a medieval war. In the middle leftovers of the battle, Tarja sings the 'renewed' "Sleeping Sun".
