[edit] Sysop
Congratulations! You are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. Good luck. Angela. 07:05, May 5, 2004 (UTC)

- Given that I've explained more than once that the problem has to do with commercial vs. non-commercial use, how is it that you still view the issue as being a dispute between Canadian and American law? Bearcat 06:32, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- I may not comprehend the issue entirely but I would have thought that by now someone would offer a solution as to solving this issue.SD6-Agent 06:34, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- It's 3 a.m., and chances are that there aren't too many other canuckawikipedians awake just at the moment. Give it a day or two. It's unfortunately a very tricky issue; it's distinctly possible that we won't be able to solve it without consulting a lawyer.

- You don't need to understand every last nook and cranny of GFDL, but please understand the basic point that because of the way Wikipedia content is licensed, Wikipedia is a commercial use. As a result, using material licensed only for non-commercial use is problematic. Please just don't upload anything else that's licensed for non-commercial use, until we can get a clear answer regarding the legalities involved. Bearcat 06:50, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- I agree. We need a lawyer, or someone who knows laws well enough, to offer a solution. If this isn't a Canada vs. US laws issue then I have to wonder how a lawyer could help us.SD6-Agent 07:20, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- A lawyer could tell us whether or not a commercial source can use "non-commercial use only" logos under the "fair use" provision. (And by the way, if we can, the appropriate tag to use in that case would be {{logo}}. But under the circumstances, I'd still recommend we don't just start using that until we can clarify the matter, because even the logo template cites "fair use". Everything with that tag on it currently is a corporate logo that isn't under an NCU-only license.)

- It's unfortunate, but the reality is that there's a distinct possibility that we will have to delete the images. The way you've talked about the matter so far, I'm just worried that you'll take it a bit too personally if that's what happens. Bearcat 07:53, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- You're right. I do understand this is not a Canada-US issue but when the result of this is that information provided by the Canadian government can't be used here because of a law it contradicts then I feel slighted. As a Canadian, I feel that a slap in the face of Canadian law (Crown Copyright) is a slap in my face too. - It's not a slap in the face to Canadian law. It's just a conflict between two equally legitimate forms of content licensing. You don't even have to compare Canadian law to American law to run into this problem; it's a conflict that exists just as vividly within Canadian law. If Wikipedia were governed solely by Canadian law, we would still have this problem.

- In the meantime, I've reviewed the items with this tag on it. "Official portrait" photos of political figures by themselves, intended mainly to illustrate their biographical pages, are unquestionably fair use. Retag those as {{promophoto}}, but do cite the source in the text box under the tag. But only do those for now; don't retag anything else (including group shots) until we can get further clarification. Bearcat 08:32, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Sigh. You said you understood it this morning, and yet you're still back onto the notion that there's a national law conflict here. I'll explain this point-form:
- Wikipedia is a commercial use.
- The terms of CanadaCopyright specify "non-commercial use only".
- A commercial use cannot use "non-commercial" content, because a commercial use is not a non-commercial use.
- If Wikipedia were based in Canada and governed exclusively by Canadian copyright law, there would still be a conflict between commercial and non-commercial use, and we would therefore still be facing the same problem.
- If the images were American, there would still be a conflict between commercial and non-commercial use, and we would therefore still be facing the same problem.
- Since the same conflict still exists no matter which country's copyright law is applied, the conflict is not between Canadian and American copyright law; it is between "commercial" and "non-commercial" use.
Could you please let me know which point you're still having trouble with? Bearcat 22:28, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- I'll make this as straightforward as I can: Where can I find similar information, that I could get from http://www.parl.gc.ca, that is applicable under commercial use? SD6-Agent 23:13, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- I don't know; unfortunately, that's what we're going to have to research in the coming days. SimonP already posted a link to the National Archives' database of Canadian-related public domain images. Unfortunately, however, some types of photos probably don't have any viable GFDL-suitable equivalents, but "fair use" doesn't always mean we can just use the non-commercial version anyway; in some cases, we're just going to have to accept that there just won't be any available image that we can legally use. Bearcat 23:27, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- We need to find someone who is familiar with Canadian law. I think that may be our only answer.SD6-Agent 23:34, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Charlesdalfen.jpg

|
Thanks for uploading Image:Charlesdalfen.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --OrphanBot 07:53, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:T'pring.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:T'pring.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Rossrs 15:37, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Stonetemplepilots.jpeg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

[edit] Stephane Provost
A tag has been placed on Stephane Provost, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

Article Improvement By Maxim Upon some discussion on the WikiProject talk page, the Article Improvement Drive page was revamped by Krm500 and Maxim. It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status. edit
Diacritics By Maxim In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt. edit
Task forces By Maxim This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES. This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock. edit

Featured Topic Drive By Maxim Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:
Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion. |

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:JosephMcGuire.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:JosephMcGuire.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 20:35, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Notability of The Westin Ottawa
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on The Westin Ottawa, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because The Westin Ottawa seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting The Westin Ottawa, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] Samantha Wildman
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Samantha Wildman, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Samantha Wildman. [edit] Image source problem with Image:Liana white.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Liana white.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 07:34, 22 December 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 07:34, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Spatial anomaly
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Spatial anomaly, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. [edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:LOTRROTKmovie.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:LOTRROTKmovie.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:39, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:LOTRFOTRmovie.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:LOTRFOTRmovie.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Quentin X (talk) 19:01, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] AfD nomination of Editor in chief
An editor has nominated Editor in chief, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Editor in chief and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 20:59, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] List of Chief Public Health Officers of Canada
Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article List of Chief Public Health Officers of Canada, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter Dear SD6-Agent! You are receiving as you are a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey There's been many more new things going on at WP:HOCKEY, and I think this will help you to stay informed. Since the last newsletter sent out in October, there have been many new changes. I'm hoping to make this newsletter a bit more regular; Kaiser matias and Skudrafan1 asked for a new issue a week ago, but sadly, I've been a bit lazy and committed to other things hence this other delay. --Maxim(talk) edit

Task forces By Maxim There was a new taskforce created within the WikiProject to deal with topics related to the Boston Bruins. It was originally founded as a separate WikiProject, but was quickly turned into a taskforce within WikiProject Ice Hockey. The list of participants is located here. Located at WP:BRUINS, the taskforce's goals are to make Boston Bruins and Bobby Orr featured articles. Good luck! edit
New Administrators By Maxim
A previously admin-only feature has been made available for all users. The rollback feature allows a user to quickly revert vandalism with one click. If you wish to have rollback, contact an active admin or post a request to WP:RFR. edit
Featured Topic Drive By Maxim The original featured topic drive, initiated by Scorpion0422, has concluded succesfully. National Hockey League awards is now a featured topic, with 24 articles in total. Of them, 20 are featured lists, one is a featured article, and the other three are trophy articles that were too short to become featured lists. Eight users signed up to help out, shown here. The next Featured Topic hasn't been decided upon, and the ideas and organization for it fell apart. If you have any ideas, don't hesitate to share them at WT:HOCKEY. edit

[edit] Speedy deletion
A tag has been placed on Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. WilliamMThompson (talk) 07:46, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
