Roberto Luís Gaspar de Deus Severo[1], OIH, born in Lisbon, 3 May 1976), known as Beto (pron. IPA: ['bɛtu]), is a Portuguese football player, who plays as a central defender with Spain's Recreativo de Huelva. He is known for, early in his career, while at Sporting Lisbon, scoring some important goals, namely against F.C. Porto, but also two own goals in a single match against rivals Benfica.
He was a defensive force as well as team captain at Sporting during his stay, and won the national championship title twice, in 1999-00 and 2001-02.
After falling out with Sporting coach Paulo Bento, in January 2006, he signed for Bordeaux for €1 million. On the last day of summer transfer window of the same year, he was sent on loan to La Liga newcomer Recreativo de Huelva. On July 3rd, 2007, Beto signed a three-year permanent deal with the Andalusia outfit.
Beto made his Portugal debut in a World Cup qualifier against Germany in Berlin (1-1), and was part of the squads at the 2002 World Cup, and both the 2000 and 2004 European Football Championships.
