[edit] The name

The Norse form of the name was Reindalr. The first element is the rivername Rein (now Rena), the last element is dalr m 'valley, dalr'. The meaning of the rivername is unknown. (Maybe the same meaning as the German rivername Rhine.)

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1989). It shows the heads of two reindeers.

(See also the coat-of-arms of Eidfjord, Porsanger, Tromsø, Vadsø and Vågå.)

[edit] Geography

Rendalen is bordered on the northwest by Alvdal and Tynset, in the north by Tolga, in the east by Engerdal, in the south by Trysil and Åmot, and in the west by Stor-Elvdal.

Rendalen municipality encompasses most of the Rendalen valley, a side valley of the Østerdalen. In addition the municipality encompasses the northern part of Storsjøen, a mountainous area in the east of Rendalen and a small part of Østerdalen itself.

The municipality, at 3,180 km², is the largest in southern Norway.

The highest mountain is Sølen (Midtre) at 1,755 m (5,758 ft)

[edit] History

The municipality was created as Rendal formannskapsdistrikt i 1837. In 1880 Rendal had a population of 3 529.

The same year Rendal was split in two, to create the municipalities of Ytre- and Øvre Rendal. The two were reunited on January 1, 1965 and took the name Rendalen.

[edit] Economy

The primary occupations are in farming and lumbering, but tourism is also important. The Renåfjellet mountain area provides for excellent alpine hiking.
