This article provides a list of fictional planets featured in the science fiction television shows Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
See also: Humans in SG-1, Humans in Atlantis.

In the Stargate fictional universe, the use of Stargate devices, and much later in the series, a small number of space-faring vessels, humans of Earth have come into contact with a large number of other Earth-like, populated planets. While most planets are shown only once, and then revisited periodically in the background of the show, some planets become key locations in the plot. Examples include the planet Abydos, the original planet visited in the Stargate movie; Chulak, Teal'c's homeworld; Dakara, the centre of the newly-formed Free Jaffa Nation; and Langara, homeworld of Jonas Quinn.

Some critics of the show point to the implausibility that 99% of planets encountered are habitable to humans, and are ultimately very similar to Earth. This is in fact an oversight: the Stargates were not scattered randomly, but rather were placed selectively on planets like Earth; thus planets like Earth are the only destinations reachable. In addition, the use of MALPs means that episodes simply do not occur on non-Earthlike planets. Likewise, the reason that most planets are inhabited by humans is that the Stargates were used predominantly by the Goa'uld for transporting humans from Earth to other planets to be used as slaves. Further, it has been stated that the Goa'uld terraformed many new planets over thousands of years to be more habitable for their human slaves.[1]

Some of the planets listed were taken from the cartouche on Abydos, which was originally thought to be the only planet that could be dialed from the Earth stargate. However, after visiting the cartouche, the SGC were able to make the correct calculations compensating for stellar drift.

The list of planets is separated by the galaxies in which planets are found, as travel tends to be restricted to within one galaxy - the Milky Way in SG-1, and the Pegasus Galaxy in Atlantis. Where available, the Stargate address and SGC designation are included.

Most Stargate-accessible locations are assigned an SGC designation of the form P00-000 (M00-000 is used in the Pegasus galaxy more often), where "0" is replaced by a letter or number. "It's based on a binary code the computer uses for extrapolation", according to Samantha Carter ("The Broca Divide"). Dr. Jackson and Lt. Ford ("The Siege (Part 1)") have suggested easier-to-remember nomenclatures without success. However, if the local name of a planet is known then that name is often used in place of the designation.

When dialing a gate, it is important that (within the Milky Way, for the most part) a seventh chevron be encoded - for the point of origin. There are instances where eight chevrons are required - such as dialing distant galaxies, such as Ida (the home of the Asgard) or Pegasus, the location of Atlantis. Additionally, a ninth chevron exists on the Stargate, for travel to the Stargate "Worldship" that seeds galaxies with stargates.

The Pegasus Galaxy is a dwarf galaxy where Stargate Atlantis takes place. In reality, there are two galaxies in the Local Group called Pegasus Dwarf; the Pegasus Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy and the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular Galaxy. It has not been explicitly stated which of these is the galaxy in the Stargate universe. However, in this discussion regarding the new McKay-Carter Intergalactic Gate Bridge, General Hank Landry states that the distance between the Pegasus and Milky Way galaxies is "three million light-years," suggesting that the series takes place in the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular Galaxy.[39]

Planet itself left unnamed by humans; as per the Ancient database and the Ancient Helia,[39] the planet's real name is Lantea. Named "Atlantica" by Lt. Ford in "Suspicion" although this name was rejected by Major Sheppard. Is covered with water with the bottom of the ocean providing a plentiful source of geothermal energy.[41] Has a single continent with 15 million square miles of area.[42] Life on the planet faces two great natural dangers: destructive storms covering nearly 20% of the planet every twenty to thirty years caused by the warming of the ocean,[43][44] and coronal mass ejections from the Lantean system's star, which occurs about every 15,000 years.[45]. Is ultimately abandoned after the Asurans attacked with a satellite beam weapon.

Klorel's Ship The gate address is only valid while Klorel's ship is orbiting a particular planet. Once the ship leaves, the address would change.
Midway Space Station A space station situated in intergalactic space midway between the Milky Way and Pegasus galaxies and containing one Stargate from each of the two galactic Stargate systems. This forms the center span of the McKay-Carter Intergalactic Gate Bridge, a string of Stargates that allows travel between the two galaxies without requiring a ZPM as the energy cost is spread over many gates, the system is said to be completely secure so there is no need for a shield or iris. Was destroyed by the self-destruct when the Wraith hijacked it in "Midway". It is currently unknown if they will rebuild it.[54]

[edit] Protected Planets Treaty

The Protected Planets Treaty is an armistice between the Goa'uld and the Asgard in the Stargate universe. The treaty ensures these planets remain free from Goa'uld oppression. A majority of the information that has been given about the Protected Planets Treaty was given in the third-season episode "Fair Game". There are 27 planets that are known to be members, including Earth. However, only five other planets have been specifically mentioned: Adara, an Asgard research station in "Revelations"; Galara, a technologically advanced planet in "Collateral Damage"; K'Tau in "Red Sky"; PX3-595 in "Shades of Grey"; and Cimmeria, a planet occupied by descendants of the Vikings. Featured in the episodes "Thor's Hammer" and "Thor's Chariot".

The System Lords themselves are held responsible for enforcing the treaty among the Goa'uld, required to ensure compliance from lower-ranking Goa'ulds under the threat of punitive action on the part of the Asgard if they do not. However, it seems that this protection from the Goa'uld is the only thing that works in favor of those who are part of it, as the Goa'uld are ensured that no species that is protected by the Asgard is allowed to advance to the point where they would be a threat to the Goa'uld (as determined by the System Lords, of course), and that no world may be protected from natural disasters through the use of Asgard technology. Also, if any of the terms are violated on any planet, the treaty as a whole becomes void. The main reason that the Asgard are willing to follow these terms is that, although the Goa'uld fear the Asgard, the Asgard are actually bluffing. Despite their shockingly large technological advantage over the Goa'uld; with one Asgard ship capable of singlehandedly destroying entire fleets of Ha'tak vessels without sustaining any damage itself, the entirety of their military forces are engaged in a brutal and depressing war with the Replicators and would be unable to protect most of the member planets if the System Lords decided to ignore it. If a single Goa'uld were to rise to power (like Apophis, Sokar, Anubis or Ba'al) and ignore the treaty, the Asgard would not be able to prevent attacks on protected planets.

On more than one occasion, the terms of the treaty have been bent, broken or ignored. This happened with the Goa'uld's demand of the Tau'ril to relinquish their Stargate in "Fair Game", with the Asgard's possible intervening in the destruction of K'Tau in "Red Sky", the Goa'uld asteroid attack during "Fail Safe", Tanith coercing the Tollan into launching an attack on the Earth using their unique phase-shifting technology in "Between Two Fires", and Anubis' attack on Adara in "Revelations" (although both the System Lords and the Asgard ignored the treaty). With the defeat of the System Lords late in the eighth season, the Treaty is no longer in effect.
