[edit] Character history

General Landry was assigned as the commander of Stargate Command in Season 9 by President Henry Hayes, having been hand-picked by his predecessor Jack O'Neill to succeed him. He is a close friend of O'Neill and George Hammond.

As stated in "Uninvited", Landry was apparently a pilot in the Vietnam War, and was shot down over Laos, well north of the DMZ, spending over 8 days in the jungle hunted by the North Vietnamese army.[2] According to Stargate SG-1: The DVD Collection magazine,[citation needed] Landry was born on October 6, 1945 in Sacramento, California, USA. When he was a Captain during the war in Vietnam, he flew a Bell UH-1A helicopter for the 82nd Airborne Division. He transported troops and supplies during combat operations and played a part in daring rescue missions. Following the Vietnam War Landry was promoted to Major and later took part in tough operations in Grenada, Kosovo, and the Gulf. Landry rose quickly through the ranks to become Colonel and ultimately General. This information did however not appear in the series.

Landry has a daughter, Dr. Carolyn Lam, Stargate Command's chief medical officer in Seasons 9 and 10. In the first few episodes of Season 9, there were innuendos and implications flying,[3] and the audience was unsure what exactly the relationship was between them. General Landry has a penchant for quoting famous generals such as George Washington, Douglas MacArthur and George S. Patton. As revealed in "Uninvited" is that Landry is also an avid birder.

Although the character was absent in several episodes in Seasons 9 and 10, he appeared in several Stargate Atlantis episodes of season 2 and 3, namely "The Intruder", "Critical Mass", "No Man's Land", and the two-parter episode "The Return.

In the alternate reality of "The Road Not Taken", Landry is the President of the United States of America.

In "Unending", Landry died of old age after 20 years in the time dilation field. However Landry was alive by the end of the episode because the time inside the field was reversed.

[edit] Creation and development

"I think [Landry] likes to empower his team. He realizes how challenged they are. It's a huge burden to protect their country from the entire galaxy, but he also recognizes that, like himself, they are human beings. [...] Sometimes he does that with a bark, and sometimes with a bite, but he also has a sense of humor, this man. And he likes to fool with people."
—Beau Bridges[4]

Beau Bridges accepted the role because he was a science fiction fan. Bridges was particularly interested in the character basically he was a blank page. Producer Robert C. Cooper invited Bridges to flesh out the character and develop his biography. Bridges research generals to find the backstory. Bridge made no deliberate effort to distinguish his character from O'Neill, believing that General Landry could stand on his own.[4]
