Pazzano (1965)
Pazzano (1965)

The first notice of Pazzano that is known dates to 1094 by a document. The town was born for mine extraction reasons. Until XX century, iron(by pyrite) were extracted in the zone of Pazzano, and moybdenum was extracted by the caves of Monte Stella and Monte Consolino. Pazzano became a Comune in 1811. The first major was Giuseppe Certomà. By Fifties of XX century the inhabitants begin the emigration to the north of Italy because of a lack of work and Pazzano's population drastically slowed down. In 1985 Pazzano was the subject of the movie-documentary Andata e Ritorno by film director Daniele Segre. By the 1980s the ecomuseum Ecomuseo delle ferriere e fonderie di Calabria (Ecomuseum of iron-foundry and foundry of Calabria) was created to attract tourism and develop industrial archeology to preserve and remember the past of a sidergic town.

The economy of Pazzano is largely based on agriculture and tourism.

The Sanctuary of Monte Stella is the prevalent tourist attraction drawing thousands of religious pilgrims from Italy and all around the world.

The village was founded due the presence of large iron deposits in the mountains, whose exploitation dates back to the time of the Greeks (magna grecia).

The mining of iron, limonite and pyrite dates back to the early 1000's and, during the reign of the 'Kingdom of Two Sicilies', it's 25 mines made Pazzano the most important mining centre in all of southern Italy.
