During World War II, Oklahoma was a major United States Army Air Force (USAAF) training center for pilots and aircrews of USAAF fighters and bombers.
The USAAF established seven major airfields under the command of Fourth Air Force, headquartered at Hamilton Army Airfield, California between 1942 and 1945. These were:
- Altus Army Airfield (Now Altus AFB) (IATA: LTS, ICAO: KLTS)
- Ardmore Army Airfield (Now Ardmore Municipal Airport) (IATA: ADM, ICAO: KADM)
- Enid Army Airfield (Now Vance AFB) (IATA: END, ICAO: KEND)
- Muskogee Army Airfield (Closed)
- Tinker Army Airfield (Now Tinker AFB) (IATA: TIK, ICAO: KTIK)
- Will Rogers Field (Now Will Rogers World Airport) (IATA: OKC, ICAO: KOKC)
- Woodward Army Airfield (Now Woodward Airport) (IATA: WWR, ICAO: KWWR)
Clinton-Sherman AFB, originally Clinton Naval Air Station, was acquired by the U. S. Navy in 1942. It was on 15 September 1954, that the USAF leased the site from the City of Clinton to be used as an Air Force Base.
