Brent Wade Moll is an American Geographer born in Fountain Hill, Pennsylvania on 4 November 1954 at 8:33am. Mr. Moll holds both bachelor (B.S.) and master (M.S.) degrees in Geography from the University of South Carolina. His secondary areas of interest are Computer Science, Astrophysics, History and Military Science.

Mr. Moll is a practitioner of geographic information systems and Remote sensing, and has worked on projects for a number of federal agencies including NASA, CIA, Department of Energy (ORNL) and Department of Defense (Air Force). He has taught Geography and Geographic Information Management Systems at the university level and authored many articles. Mr. Moll is a Certified Mapping Scientist (GIS/LIS) by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

He currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia working on various projects in the GIS/Remote Sensing arena, as well as the Computer Science arena as a consultant with IBM, specializing in High Availability (HACMP) High-availability clusters of midrange IBM System p platforms running the AIX operating system as well as Hewlett-Packard 9000 servers running HP-UX 11.x with MC-Serviceguard.

In addition, he has lived or worked in over 20 countries serving in the United States Air Force.

[edit] Oak Ridge National Laboratory

At Oak Ridge National Laboratory he was responsible for advanced GIS Computing and Technology as a Principal Investigator with the University of Tennessee. Specialties and interests included geographic information systems, remote sensing, advanced visualization and virtual reality applications, environmental modeling, image processing, web applications, site characterization, demographic analysis, facility and terrain modeling, and geospatial data management.

Some accomplishments include:

  • Creation of color-balanced digital orthophoto maps of DOE Reservations.
  • Locating surface and subsurface unexploded ordnance using remote sensing technologies.
  • Assisting environmental decision-makers through the use of GIS and remote characterization and monitoring technologies.
  • Building and maintaining historic geospatial data bases.
  • Designing and implementing decision support systems.
  • Developing and managing complex environmental information systems.
  • Conducting facility modeling and virtual reality applications.

Other projects included assisting in hazard prediction, population at risk estimation, and visualization associated with atmospheric releases.

[edit] South Florida Water Management District

At the South Florida Water Management District, Brent Moll developed a major information management system to assist in the management of land and water resources for a sixteen county area of South Florida.

Some accomplishments included:

  • Coordinate, manage and oversee adoption and GIS development and implementation for a sixteen (16) county area of South Florida.
  • Provided advice to senior management in developing achievable GIS goals and established priorities to support the mission of the SFWMD using GIS/Remote Sensing technology.
  • Facilitated the development of the GIS User's Group and other staff coordination activities. Prepared correspondence including guidance documents, papers, briefings, etc., about the GIS/Remote Sensing development program.
  • Provided budgetary guidelines in support of the adoption, development, implementation, maintenance, and sustainment of GIS.
  • Implemented applications of GIS/Remote Sensing to support the District's enforcement policies with regards to land permitting activities.
  • Pioneered the utilization of GPS in land surveying/GIS development projects.
  • Use of GIS/Remote Sensing technology in various litigation.

Mr Moll supported various State and Federal agencies in the recovery of natural disasters (Hurricane Andrew) in South Florida. He represented the SFWMD at numerous state and national meetings and conferences to present information and gain support for GIS and Remote Sensing.

His family is one of the oldest in Pennsylvania having arrived from Weisenheim am Sand in the Rhineland-Palatinate in 1731. His ancestor, John Michael Moll arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Pensilvania Merchant" and is listed in Pennsylvania German Pioneers. Brent W. Moll is a ninth-generation descendant, and is member of The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; The General Society of the War of 1812, and The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

He attended the 13th World Scout Jamboree in Asagiri Heights, Japan during August, 1971. In 1973, he was an extra in the James Bond film "The Man With The Golden Gun", being stationed at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand at the time with the United States Air Force.

He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina with additional studies at the University Of Maryland, Munich Germany; The City Colleges of Chicago, Europe; University College London and King's College, Cambridge, England. During his college years he was listed twice in Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities (1983, 1984); The National Dean's List (1982, 1983), and was named to the USC Dean's list for twelve (12) semesters as an undergraduate (1980-83). Mr Moll received the Outstanding Carolina Alumni Award.

In 1979, while living in the United Kingdom, Mr. Moll appeared as a contestant on the BBC Television programme "Mastermind".
