I made several changes to this page based on information I gathered as a geographic historian in Oak Ridge (for the University of Tennessee) during the 1990s. Among other edits, I changed the figure of "100,000 workers" to "70,000 residents". One bit of information that still needs clarifying is the number of residents in the Oak Ridge section of town (i.e., not in the construction camps) during World War II. I opted for a conservative but perhaps not very helpful figure of "more than 20,000." Does anyone have better information to clarify this number? --Milton Stanley

Okay, in the absense of any specific complaint, I'm making the following change and deleting the NPOV tag. I'm changing: "That dramatic population increase, and the secret nature of the project, meant chronic shortages of housing and supplies. The experience of many worker-residents of Oak Ridge was living in a makeshift "Victory Cottage" on the side of a hill, standing in line for food, and working at a job they weren't allowed to talk about." to: "That dramatic population increase, and the secret nature of the project, meant chronic shortages of housing and supplies during the war years." I changed the "importance" rating for Tennessee project from Low to Mid. Based on the project criteria, it arguably could be "High," since this is a city that "can be reasonably expected to be included in any print encyclopedia," but "Mid" is a reasonable compromise.--orlady 02:25, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

I noticed that the section of notable people from Oak Ridge contains persons contains individuals who were "born, educated, resided, or worked in Oak Ridge". The list includes scientists as well as porn actresses. I do think that the most notable people from any town or city should be mentioned in the article about the town or city they spent a considerable time of their lives in, or were born in. But the list should be of reasonable length in the article. Maybe the complete list of individuals from Oak Ridge would be in a good place in a separate list, leaving the most important sons and daughters of the city in the article and referring to the list. doxTxob \ ^talk 06:27, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Metric units

I suggest to add the metric units (degrees Celsius °C) to the temperature table in the Geography and climate section to make sure that readers who are not accustomed to the non-metric system have a chance to compare the values to a system that is used in any non-English speaking country.
