North Carolina's 5th congressional district covers the northwestern corner of North Carolina from the Appalachian Mountains to the Piedmont Triad. The district includes Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Davie, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties and parts of Forsyth, Iredell, and Rockingham counties.

The fifth district is represented by Rep. Virginia Foxx, a Republican. She has held the office since 2005. In the 2006 Election, Foxx defeated Democrat Roger Sharpe for reelection. She is opposed by Roy Carter in the 2008 general election.
