New York Cross Harbor Railroad (AAR reporting marks NYCH) operated the only rail-float barge operation in the New York Harbor, USA, from 1983 until 2006. NYCH served businesses on both sides of the harbor with daily crossings between Jersey City, New Jersey, and Brooklyn, New York. The trip takes 45 minutes to cross the harbor as compared to shipping overland via CSX's Selkirk Terminal which can take up to five days round trip. NYCH operated from its 27 acre Greenville Terminal Yard in Jersey City and its six-acre Bush Terminal Yard, terminus of the Bay Ridge Branch in Brooklyn. On the west side of New York Harbor, the NYCH interchanged rail cars destined for the CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern railroads at Conrail Shared Assets Operation's Oak Island interchange yard, New Jersey. On the east side of the harbor, the NYCH interchanged rail cars with the New York and Atlantic Railway in Brooklyn for railcars whose destinations are Long Island, the northeast United States or Canada. NYCH also connected with the New York City Transit subsidiary South Brooklyn Railway (SBK). NYCH offered dockside and shipside delivery and was able to handle high and wide cargo, as well as other special commodities.
Since 2006, New York New Jersey Rail LLC, a private company, has operated the core service between Greenville and Bush Terminals. It interchanges with the New York and Atlantic Railway, Norfolk Southern and CSX.
