[edit] Base fares

The base fare for MTA local buses and subways, and Bee-Line local buses, are $2, and the base express bus fare is $5. NOTE: In Westchester County, all routes, including routes marked as express, are local fare lines except for the BxM3 and the BxM4C.

The $5 fare is also charged on AirTrain JFK. No free transfers, however, are available to and from AirTrain JFK.

For customers buying a Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard, 15% will be added for all purchases of $7 or more. For example, a $20 purchase gives you $23 on your card. 11 trips for the price of 10, with $1 balance.

[edit] Transfers

All transfers with MetroCard are free from bus to subway, local bus to local bus and subway to local bus. For transfers to express buses from local buses, an additional $3 is deducted from a Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard. With coins, transfers are available to different local buses only, with some restrictions. All transfers are good for two hours. In addition, transfers on Long Island Bus cost $0.25, and are valid only between different LI Bus or Suffolk Transit routes. All other transfers are free with payment of fare.

Bee-Line customers needing to transfer to CT Transit, TOR, or PART services must ask for a transfer, even if paying with MetroCard.

[edit] Fare History

Below are the fares charged for single boardings on NYCTA transit lines (and its predecessors). Different combinations of transfer privileges have altered these fares from time to time and massively increased transfer privileges and pass discounts have lowered the average real fare significantly since 1997.

On November 23, 2005, a $1.00 holiday fare promotion was instituted by the MTA on behalf of riders until January 2, 2006. Express Buses continued to require the regular fare. On Christmas Day and New Years Day the local bus rides were free.
