Signing with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2005, Washington became the first Tiffin player in the modern era to play in the NFL. He made his first career touchdown catch, a 27 yard touchdown, in a Thursday night game against the Miami Dolphins on opening night of the 2006 NFL season. His first career reception came in the 2005 AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos.

He was the Steelers' slot receiver throughout the 2006 season, and started two games after injuries to Hines Ward.

A restricted free agent in the 2008 offseason, Washington signed his one-year, $1.417 million tender offer on April 16, 2008. Washington is currently the team's third receiver behind Ward and Santonio Holmes.

During a 2006 NFL regular-season game against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7, Washington was whistled for a false-start penalty with eight seconds remaining and the score tied at 38-38. As Pittsburgh backup quarterback Charlie Batch threw the ball into the ground to stop the clock, Washington flinched too slightly during the no-huddle offense and the false-start penalty led to an automatic 10-second clock runoff, sending the game into sudden death. The Falcons won the overtime coin-toss and eventually won on a field goal, 41-38.
