Mutt Williams (also called Henry Jones III[1]) is a character in the Indiana Jones franchise, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf.[2] He is introduced in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as a motorcycle-riding greaser and becomes Indiana Jones's sidekick. He is the son of Marion Ravenwood, an old flame of Indiana Jones, and Indiana Jones is actually his father. His birth name is Henry Walton Jones III. He has a fear of scorpions, similar to Indy's fear of snakes.[citation needed]

When he tells Indiana that his name is "Mutt," Indiana replies "What kind of a name is that?" Mutt tells him it's the name he chose for himself, a subtle reference to Indiana naming himself after his dog (instead of his father, Henry).

[edit] Conception and creation

Frank Marshall said Mutt represents a youthful arrogance, to show Indiana is older and wiser.[3] LaBeouf was Spielberg's first and only choice for the role.[4] Excited at the prospect of being in an Indiana Jones film, LaBeouf signed on without reading the script and did not know what character he would play.[5] LaBeouf watched Blackboard Jungle and The Wild One to get into his character's mindset, copying mannerisms and words from characters in those films, such as the use of a switchblade as a weapon.[6] Authentic 1950s jackets were found for LaBeouf's costume,[7] while Harley-Davidson provided his motorcycle.[8]

George Lucas is interested in producing a spin-off about Mutt and his own adventures, with Indiana in a supporting role.[9]

Two 3¾ in figures of Mutt,[10] a deluxe figure of him on his motorcycle,[11] an Adventures Heroes figurine,[12] and a 12 in figure were released in 2008.[13] Mutt is available in three Lego Indiana Jones sets based on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.[14]
