[edit] Notability of George M Shaver
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on George M Shaver, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because George M Shaver seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting George M Shaver, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] Shaver Transportation Company
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Shaver Transportation Company, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of the page. -- Signed by Wolverenesst c 23:02, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

- You've got a little time to add enough information to establish this company's notability, but I see you also have the same problem with Shaver himself. Best of luck. --Rodhullandemu (talk - contribs) 23:06, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Steamboats
Hi Mtsmallwood, Thanks for the nice compliment on my talkpage. It's great to meet another wikipedian interested in steamboats. It is a topic that needs a lot more coverage here. I've started several articles but have really only scratched the surface in BC. Paddle steamers were such a huge part of our early history and played a larger role than many people realize, and I'm sure the same must be true for Oregon. One thing I've always found interesting is that many of our paddle steamer captains came from there, like William Irving (steamship captain) and John Bonser (steamship captain). It's hard to find the details of their early years, much of the history is already being lost, it seems. Any information you've come across to add to those articles, please feel free. Some parts of quite sketchy. What I find nice, is that the pictures are usually old enough that the aren't copyrighted and they can be used freely. Another page you might like to work on, that needs some TLC, is Riverboat. WP:Ships is also an interesting place to browse around for articles and other people with similar interests.
Anyway, I really enjoyed your articles, T.J. Potter and Wide West and look forward to talking to you again. I haven't been able to do as much on here lately, but am hoping to get back into the swing of things soon.CindyBotalk 05:37, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] License tagging for Image:Long Beach WA RR station rebuilding 3-25-2000.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Long Beach WA RR station rebuilding 3-25-2000.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --OrphanBot (talk) 21:09, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Steamboats of the Columbia River
A tag has been placed on Steamboats of the Columbia River, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. [edit] Klipsan Beach Live Saving Station
Hey, no problem! Well, at least, very little problem. The other day somebody pointed me to the Elkman infobox generator. All I did was put in the name of the site. As for the architect, if you've got a source that says something different, I would change that, the generator isn't perfect. Good luck! Murderbike (talk) 06:55, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Minto
Hi Mtsmallwood, Just caught your message. I'm not aware of anything on the Minto currently. I think we're still missing lots of sternwheeler articles. Skookum1 was working on Vessels of the Lakes Route article and there is the List of ships in British Columbia that are works in progress. I think most of the BC sternwheeler articles I started or came across can be found in Category:Paddle steamers of British Columbia.CindyBotalk 21:56, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Hello
Very impressed with your work on steamboats on the Columbia. I just made a few edits to Steamboats on the Columbia River, mostly just standardizing to Wikipedia style guidelines. Let me know if you have any questions, I've done a lot of work on Columbia River articles and am always happy to do more. This is really a great addition to the encyclopedia, and I hope you stick around!! -Pete (talk) 01:30, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Request
Do you think you could add a paragraph or two about the steamboats to the Columbia River article, maybe in the Navigation section? I'd do so myself, but I'm not sure I'm familiar enough with the history to properly hit the high points. -Pete (talk) 09:41, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Small observation
I suspect that the J.N. Teal was named after Joseph Nathan Teal, a Portland businessman who was a big proponent of development along the Columbia. His speeches were quoted at an exhibit I saw last spring at the Maryhill Museum. -Pete (talk) 09:36, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, I've got a bit of to-do list for Oregon-related liberty ship namesakes, and yes, according to one of the sources I found this sounds like the same Teal. See: [1]. If I ever get around to writing about him, I'll let you know. Katr67 (talk) 05:34, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Washington/New Articles
I've noticed that you've done some very nice work creating and enhancing various PNW articles during the past two months. To help raise the visibility of your new articles, let me suggest that you announce them on Wikipedia:WikiProject Washington/New Articles. That way, persons with this page on their watchlist will know when you've generated new content. Thanks! Myasuda (talk) 14:27, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Another source
In case you haven't run across it, I just found an interesting chapter of Harvey W. Scott's 1891 History of Portland, on river navigation. You can access the book online here, and it's chapter XIII, beginning on p. 248. Accounts from James W. Nesmith and William Strong (Oregon judge) are recounted verbatim, and discuss many of the topics you have covered in your recent articles. Might be worth a look! -Pete (talk) 22:16, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Steamer Umatilla
Mr. MTsmallwood. Thanks for updating/expanding the Ilwaco RR and N page. I just placed a post to get it started, but not having the book, I had few details. A question....do you have any info on the pioneer steamer Umatilla c1860? wiki...sfsorrow2 go thru the history of Ilwaco or Blewett Wa to get the citation and leave a note, tnxs
- More than one vessel was named Umatilla. There was a Umatilla steamship that was wrecked near Point Wilson on September 29, 1896. (this per McCurdy, page 9). This was the same ship that struck Umatilla Reef in 1883, and was abandoned by her crew, but later salvaged by Captain John A. "Dynamite Johnny" O'Brien. (See McCurdy at 20). Newell and Williamson in Pacific Coastal Liners report that this ship was built in Chester, PA in 1881.Mtsmallwood (talk) 22:42, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
No this is a sternwheeler c 1860. There was a sea going liner with the same name and one that Jack London travelled on. Not the same vessel. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.85.199.158 (talk) 05:32, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Lyle Zapato
An editor has nominated Lyle Zapato, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lyle Zapato and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 01:59, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Pea Island Station USLSS, circa 1890.PNG
Thanks for uploading Image:Pea Island Station USLSS, circa 1890.PNG. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

[edit] Speedy deletion of Steamboats on Cowlitz River
A tag has been placed on Steamboats on Cowlitz River requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] multiple consecutive edits
Hi Mtsmallwood, Thank you for all your hard work on Steamboats of the Oregon Coast. You received a message awhile back you seem to have overlooked—or not heeded—about using the preview function instead of saving edits. The way you're doing it creates extra work for us who watch articles changes, and creates needless extra database entries. We'd all appreciate if you could condense your series of edits into one larger edit. (Of course we understand the need to do an immediate minor edit to fix overlooked typos.) The "show preview" function should suffice for checking that everything works as intended. The boilerplate wikipedia warning is:
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. In the future, it is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thank you.

- (response also left on sender's user talk page) I assume you're talking about Steamboats of the Coquille River, a new page which IMHO is a fine little article. It has images, sources, and no OR. It has a navbox which I created myself. It takes me a bit of work to make an article look good on the screen, probably because of my own lack of skill I guess. But every edit I made to it was fully described in the edit summary. I was deliberate in doing that so that people could more easily track the edits if they wanted to. After doing all that, the first comment I get on the article was yours, and you don't contribute anything to the substance of the article or even say anything about the substance but mention only the number of the edits. I've seen many articles with more edits and less detail in the edit summary. Mtsmallwood (talk) 15:42, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

- Just this regarding your response to EncMstr: WP:CIVIL, WP:AGF, and on the last point you make WP:OTHERSTUFF. Experienced editors have no problem tracking edits using the page history and the consensus is to use the show preview button on edits to ensure an article looks good on the screen, and combine the small edits where possible to reduce strain on the servers/database. - (edit conflict) As indicated above, Steamboats of the Oregon Coast was my primary example, but all your contributions show the same pattern. Your edit summaries are excellent, as is all your work. My point is merely that you may achieve the same effect (to see what an edit looks like) by pressing "show preview" instead of "save page". Try it! My purpose in bringing it to your attention is that you might not have understood how lots of edits merely minutes apart affects watchlists, recent changes, and page history. You're already doing A work. I'd give you an A+ if you did it in fewer edits. Thanks. —EncMstr 19:09, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet
Just a quick note of thanks for your article Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet. [edit] Commercial vs. military coding for ship infoboxes
Just a quick FYI: I noticed on some of the ship articles, such as Athlon (steamboat) and a couple of others, that you appear to be using the warship coding for the infobox. The documentation at {{Infobox_Ship_Begin/doc}} provides information for commercial vessels as well, which is slightly different. One of the biggest differences being that the flag and country information goes into the "Ship registry" field, instead of being prominent at the top of the section. The reasoning for this difference is that warships actually belong to the country (so the country name and flag are prominent), while for commercial vessels, they usually belong to a company so the flag is a less prominent form of identification. There are some other minor differences between the fields used by the commercial vs. warship coding as well. Some examples of commercial ships to look at would be the M/V Hiyu, the M/V Rhododendron, or the MS Westerdam. --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 17:36, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Question
What do you, or your sources, know about Ben Holladay? The article and several sources say he had a lot of involvement with steamboats, but no details! Also, I just noticed you've never been invited to join WikiProject Oregon! What an oversight. Please take a look and consider joining, we've got a good group and could use your insights and diligent research! (Look on the talk page too, especially at the stuff about the press release; I mentioned your contributions to the steam boat history. Hope that's OK!) -Pete (talk) 02:09, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response about all that. Sounds like the mention of him as a steamboat guy are slightly exaggerated, but thanks for the context. I'm also curious if you're aware of this article's existence: Historic ferries in Oregon. - Thanks for your feedback. No need to get involved if you don't want to, of course. FWIW, the link in question, www.cityoflakewood.org, directs to a personal site with no relation to the official city site, www.cityoflakewood.us. WHOIS shows that it's registered to Puget Sound Domain (no idea what that is), and that the site's technical contact is "ismail arslangiray" -- a name similar to the guy making the edits. [edit] columbia steamboats template
Your latest inline comment reads:
- (deleted Canadian Pacific Railway link (separate navbox for BC steamboats now))
I don't understand; if this template is about the Columbia River and its tributaries, then Canada shouldn't be in a separate box; unless the template is retitled to "Columbia River steamboats in the US". Cross-border templates are nothing new, though sometimes unwieldy e.g. {{Coast Salish}}. Note that of the redlinks the Lakes Route, Stikine and Okanagan Lake are all Canadian waters, though American ships were involved (many of the the same steamers on the Lower Fraser, the Stikine and the route to and from the Stikine via the Inside Passage in t he 1860s had previously served on the Columbia, some on the Sacramento....the Yukon routes were not just Nome-Fairbanks-Dawson (few made it) but from Bennett Lake down the Yukon, via Whitehorse, to Dawson.....anyway, some clarity; which new infobox for Canadian steamboats on Columbia & tributaries? Why does it have to be separate? And re the CPR, I'm reasonably certain that there were subsidiary operating companies, not the railway itself except maybe at Balfour, British Columbia, which was a component of the southern mainline.Skookum1 (talk) 18:02, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

- See this search at BC ARchives, which is for the Umatilla, which I just redlinked/added to Umatilla. I think there were two, as a history of Gastown I had used a picture of a stern/sidewheeler type vessel on the Fraser; the one in the archives photos appears to be a later-era type of vessel; maybe they'e the same; the Umatilla of the 1860s, which was occasionally pilot by Gassy Jack himself. AFAIK it was a Columbia River vessel before it came to the Fraser, or Puget Sound anyway, but I don't see it on your steambmoats template....Skookum1 (talk) 17:29, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you for your quality articles!
I'm a regular watcher of Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships/New articles so that new ship articles can be tagged for the project. - My thought was to just markout the links for now, they will still show in the edit field, maybe we can add a Riverfront section to the article. Some of the images I can capture and upload for fairuse when I get the time, or you could put them on a user subpage.Awotter (talk) 07:48, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Images and Commons
Hi again, I just noticed that the images you're uploading are going on Wikipedia directly. It's actually better if you can upload them to http://commons.wikimedia.org , where they are available to other Wikimedia projects as well (like WikiNews, Wiktionary etc.) I think the only ones that are supposed to go directly on Wikipedia are those that are copyright, but are under Fair Use in a WP article. When an image is on Commons, you still link to it exactly the same way, it just goes and finds it on Commons automatically when it doesn't find it on Wikipedia.
Hope this makes sense...if not, ask away! -Pete (talk) 03:16, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- FYI: Another way to use the commons is by linking the images within the commons into categories, then a link from the article here can be made to the category over there via the {{commonscat}} template. See MS Oosterdam or Holland America Line for examples of the commonscat template being used in the External links section (the commonscat template is usually added to the external links section, and creates a box in the lower right hand corner of the page). --- Barek (talk • contribs) - 04:27, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] A request
Hi- several of us are currently working on the Columbia River article, hoping to get it to good or Featured quality. The Navigation section is one of the things we're discussing, and I think it could really use the input of someone with your knowledge. Think you could look it over and offer some feedback? Review the Talk:Columbia River page if you like, or just jump in if you prefer. Thanks for any help! -Pete (talk) 03:21, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Navboxes
I think they look great! No worries about the delay, it had completely slipped my mind. Thanks for pointing it out, though! -Pete (talk) 15:15, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Above Wenatchee Reach
I just checked over the Steamboats on the Columbia River]] and the related Wenatchee Reach article, and I'm curious as to how far upstream the Wenatchee service went towards Kettle Falls. Was there another navigable stretch in between, or did the Wenatchee Reach steamers reach Kettle Falls for the portage to Marcus/Northport and the ships covered in Steamboats of the Arrow Lakes? I've redlinked Columbia (sternwheeler) as I feel it needs an article of its own, which from what I gather you're far more prepared/equipped to write than me (I have only online sources, all my BC history books are back in BC - I'm in Nova Scotia these days - and I never did have much on hand covering Washington). Also I'm thinking that Steamboats on the Kootenai River and Kootenay Lake is the way to go for that article, when it's written, given that service to Nelson started from Bonner's Ferry; I'm unclear as to whether the Kootenai was navigable up to Cranbrook and points between; was there service above Bonner's Ferry?Skookum1 (talk) 17:16, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] DYK nomination of Shoshone (Snake River sternwheeler)
Hi. I've nominated Shoshone (Snake River sternwheeler), an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on April 6, where you can improve it if you see fit. Black Falcon (Talk) 23:08, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Steamboat article names
Hi; I'm not sure which of the steamboat articles/temples to take this up on, eventually on eadch of those involved....I've already suggested a minor change to Steamboats of the Upper Fraser River in British Columbia - dropping the "in British Columbia" part - but since then, given the scope of other articles, I'm thinking that Steamboats of the Fraser, Nechako and Stuart Rivers in British Columbia fits the bill, as there'll be a Steamboats of the Lower Fraser River or Steamboats of the Lower Fraser River and Harrison Lake because I'm not sure the Port Douglas traffic can entirely be separated from the Fraser traffic (I was going to put them in Vessels of the Lakes Route); similarly "and Pitt Lake" is in the equation...Steamboats of the Lower Fraser River and Pitt and Harrison Lakes is kinda unwieldy; Pitt's not so much steamboat-era though... (and "vessels" might be better because of famous barges adn tugs..or those could be their own articles I uppose); most of these were also Georgia Strait steamers, and many had ben on the Columbia, even the Sacramento.....a general History of steamboats in the Pacific Northwest as a survey article might coordinate all these. The other renamings I've wondered about are Steamboats of the Arrow Lakes and middle Columbia River, Steamboats of the upper Columbia River, Columbia Lake and Kootenai River...I know in the stateside perspective the Wenatchee Reach is the middle...but even in the main Columbia article, somewhere down near the Dalles is "middle"; so Steamboats of the Arrow Lakes and Columbia River would suffice; so much of the route is Columbia River I don't think it can be left out of the title; ditto with the Columbia Lake situation, though how far they went down the Columbia from there I've yet to figure out. In the case of the Kootenay Lake and Columbia Lake-based articles (unwritten) I'm favouring the American spelling of Kootenai, based on the length of the river in the respetive country, which is why Okanogan River with two 'o's. I supposed in Columbia Lake's case it might be Kootenay River depending on the length from Canal Flats to the border vs the border to Libby. Was there no water connection between Libby and Bonner's Ferry? Also I'm curious about the Lake Pend Oreille boats - did they make it to the Columbia, i.e. to Trail, Castlegar Trail et al? Anyway just thinking more exactitude on the names we need to get around to at some point; I hesitate to launch t he Kootenay Lk and Columbia Lk articles without knowing which spelling of Kootenay to use; with the Arrow Lakes one it's just so much of the story is Columbia River.....it should be in the title.Skookum1 (talk) 00:58, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] BC Provincial Archives
I haven't pursued it any further, but I don't see any need to. They know that, legally, they don't have any claim over the images, but if they admit that on the website they can't really ask for funding. Wikipedia is full of (cropped) images from those archives, and they haven't made a complaint yet. Template:PD-Canada applies though... 50 years if it's a government photograph. If it's not gov't produced, it's 50 year after the life of the author, unless it was produced before 49. Any photographic image published in Canada in 1912 in undoubtedly Public Domain, and you can do anything you want to a PD image, including cropping however you'd like. - TheMightyQuill (talk) 01:20, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] DYK nomination of Lytton (sternwheeler)
Hi again! I've nominated Lytton (sternwheeler), which you created for WP:DYK (see the proposed entry here). I tried to write the hook using information that is fairly unique to the article; I'm not sure if I succeeded, though... :P Black Falcon (Talk) 07:08, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
