Milwaukee Intermodal Station is a train and bus station in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is currently served by Amtrak (the national railroad passenger system) and by various intercity motorcoach operators including Coach USA, Greyhound Lines, Indian Trails, and Lamers. Megabus stops on Fifth Street near the station. (Badger Coaches has its own station located on Seventh Street between Wisconsin Avenue and Michigan Avenue). Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) bus route #57 serves the station directly (several other local bus routes operate on nearby streets). Milwaukee's other Amtrak rail station is located at General Mitchell International Airport on the south side of the city.
This station was opened in 1965 by the Milwaukee Road to replace the original CMStP&P depot that was razed the same year. The original Evertt Street depot, built in 1886, featured stone archways and a large clocktower. The 1886 depot was located on W.Everett St. between N. 3rd and N. 4th streets, across from Zeidler Park.
The 1965 depot was built on W. St. Paul Avenue in a very modernistic style that proved unpopular quickly after it was erected. A $16.9 million dollar renovation to expand the waiting area into a glass atrium, and expand Amtrak ticketing, restaurant and retail space. It is hoped that the renovation will spur redevelopment in the area. Renovations of the main building were completed in November 2007. As of March 2007, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation was studying possible renovations of the train shed and platform. In the late 1960's the Chicago and North Western Railroad closed their Milwaukee Lakefront depot and moved their passenger operations to the new Milwaukee Road depot. For a short time the station was Milwaukee Union Station. This ended when Amtrak came to pass in 1971 and CNW ceased all passenger operations.
Canadian Pacific Railway, which purchased the assets of the Milwaukee Road when it bought the remaining Soo Line stock, owns the trackage within the train shed. The CP Rail C&M Subdivision runs on two mains through the station, as well as 4 depot spurs which are used to store private railcars and Amtrak Hiawatha trains overnight so they are clear of the main tracks.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation owns the station and platforms. The DOT's Statewide Traffic Operations Center is on the 3rd floor of the station. There is a 300-space parking lot just west of the station. [1] As of March 2007, parking at the station was priced at $5.00 per day.
