Mikael Backlund (born March 17, 1989 in Västerås, Sweden) is a Swedish ice hockey player. He is 6'0" tall and weighs 191 pounds. He plays as a forward, and shoots left. On June 22, 2007, he was selected in first round, 24th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in Columbus. Scouts have ranked him second among European players. Backlund is also ranked 10th in future NHL prospects.

Backlund was a member of the Swedish team that won Silver in the 2008 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships. He scored the game winning goal in overtime in their semi-final against Russia.

On May 2, 2008, Backlund signed with the Calgary Flames.[1]
