Miguel Muñoz

Miguel Muñoz Mozún ( b. Madrid, Spain, January 19, 1922, d. Madrid, Spain, July 16, 1990 ) was a Spanish footballer and manager. Muñoz spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid where he is still the club's longest serving and most successful coach to date. In September 1955, Muñoz, a midfielder, scored the club's first ever goal in the European Cup against Servette FC. He subsequently captained Real as they won the European Cup in 1956 and 1957. Muñoz also went onto coach Real as they won the European Cup in 1960 and 1966. As a result he became the first person to win the competition both as a player and a coach. This feat was later emulated by Giovanni Trapattoni, Johan Cruyff, Carlo Ancelotti and Frank Rijkaard.

Muñoz played for various junior teams in the Madrid area including Escolapios, Buenavista, Pavon, Imperio FC and Girod but initially failed to attract the attention of Real. He subsequently played for CD Logroñés (1943-44), Racing de Santander (1944-46) and Celta Vigo (1946-48). In 1948 Muñoz, together with Pahiño, helped Celta finish fourth in La Liga and reach the Copa del Generalísimo final. He also scored in the 4-1 defeat to Sevilla CF in the Copa final. The following season, along with Pahiño, he signed for Real Madrid. Between 1948 and 1958 he played 347 games for Real. He also played 7 times for Spain.

Muñoz served a brief apprenticeship as coach of the Real reserve team, Plus Ultra CF, before been appointed coach of the senior Real Madrid team in 1959. His time in charge was one of the clubs most successful eras. Under Muñoz Real Madrid dominated La Liga, winning the competition 9 times. This included a five in a row sequence (1961-1965) and a three in row sequence (1967-69). He later managed several other La Liga teams including Granada CF (1975-76), Hércules CF (1976-77), UD Las Palmas (1977-79) and Sevilla FC (1979-82). He was also manager of Spain on two occasions. In 1969 he acted as caretaker manager for 4 games and between 1982 and 1988 he was in charge for another 59. He guided Spain to the final of the Euro 1984 and to quarter finals of the 1986 World Cup
