[edit] Bot activity
I was going over the list of bots and noticed that MichaelBillingtonBot (talk · contribs) has not edited in a very long time. Is this bot still active and if not, would you object to it being de-flagged? Please post your comments to Wikipedia_talk:Bots/Requests_for_approval#Dead_bots since this is a rather widely-posted message. MBisanz talk 06:53, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] What is the OTRS procedure for permissions?
I am currently looking into the ORTS permissions process and saw on meta:OTRS#Permissions that you were one of the people to whom OTRS slips could be sent. Thus, if someone wanted to approve their images to be used on Wikipedia, what precisely should they do? I.e., where do they click, what do they write etc.? Is the process any different for sound files? Also, if person x gets permission from person y to use person y's images/music/whatever on person x's website etc., does person x then have the right to give permission for person y's stuff to be used on Wikipedia, or would person y have to give additional permission?
Also, in my particular case, I am interested in putting screenshots back onto the Europa Barbarorum article (they were deleted previously due to not having free-use templates). I know that videogames' screenshots need {{non-free screenshot}} on their image pages, but as Europa Barbarorum is a modification that is available for download online for free (although it does require Rome: Total War to play, which is obviously a commercial PC game), does it count as free software, and constantly would a {{free screenshot}} template do? Thanks! It Is Me Here (talk) 19:51, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hello. Unfortunately, due to copyright etc, image use on Wikipedia is quite complicated. I apologise in advance for the length of this message :)
- First of all, free software and freeware are not the same thing. Free software refers to the user's freedom to copy, modify, redistribute, or even sell copies of the software and associated source code without restriction. Freeware is quite different: It allows users to use it for free. (A bit more detail can be found at gratis versus libre if I haven't explained it well enough)
- Europa Barbarorum is freeware. In order for images to be tagged with {{free screenshot}}, not only does the programme have to be free, but all media shown in the screenshot must also be under a free licence. (I took a peek at their reuse policy and it is quite far from this[1]). This means that the screenshots can't be included in the article unless the authors of the game and modification are willing to relicense it (which is very unlikely, seeing as the game which this is a mod of is recent and commercial), or if it is of some importance regarding critical sections of the article which are actually about how it looks. An example of this might be a screenshot to illustrate a glitch or error, but generally not screenshots for illustrative purposes only. (Wikipedia:Non-free content is a guideline on this)
- Giving permission for images to be used on Wikipedia also has to do with the copyright holder granting freedom for anyone to use/modify/redistribute the image, not just Wikipedia. If permission is given by the copyright holder to use an image on another site, that permission does not extend to Wikipedia, and even getting permission for it to be used on Wikipedia is not sufficient. The copyright holder has to actually release the image under a free licenses, or into the Public domain (simply releasing all copyright). The process for requesting permission is outlined in brief here. If the copyright holder wants to release an image of their own accord (rather than being asked by a Wikipedia user), then the easiest way is for them to create an account and upload it themself, with a copyright tag appropriate to how they wish to licence the image.
- I hope I've answered all of your questions! Wikipedia does have quite strict media copyright policy, but try not to let it deter you. "A picture is worth a thousand words"— so even if we can't use any screenshots then hopefully we can still have some brilliant prose for our users to read instead. :) --Michael Billington (talk) 06:35, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] the Sydney Journal
Hi there, Just thought I'd drop you, and others from the recent meetup, a line and mention that the first edition of the Dictionary of Sydney's online, peer-reviewed journal is now live.
The Sydney Journal is the first (and most academically rigorous) "product" of the Dictionary. It will be a quarterly publication with a variety of texts from upcoming Dictionary articles and is hosted by UTS E-press. This edition features 4 thematic articles, 6 ethnicities and 5 suburbs - all specifically related to Sydney.
I hope you find it useful and interesting - If nothing else it's essays are eminently referenceable for their corresponding articles here on WP.

MichaelBillington...Thank you for supporting my nomination for adminship. Through it I have become aware of a great many people who can help me in my future editing endeavors. Even though I was not promoted, your support shows that I still have something to contribute to Wikipedia, even if it is minor edits to fix spelling and grammar to working in WikiProjects to help others make great articles. If you wish to further discuss the nomination, please use its talk page. Stop by my talk page anytime, even if it is just to say hello. Have a wonderful day! - LA @ 04:30, 30 April 2008 (UTC) |
