Bush having a successful High School career decided to go to the University of Louisville. He had modest success running the ball sharing time with team mates. In his first two seasons he played behind Eric Shelton and Lionel Gates. Besides sports, Bush studied in sports administration for his major.[1]
2005, Bush's junior year at Louisville, was a breakout year for him, as he rushed for 1143 yards on 205 carries, averaging 5.6 yards per carry, scored 23 rushing touchdowns, and led NCAA Division 1-A in scoring.[2] He was also widely considered to be a preseason candidate for the 2006 Heisman Trophy.[3]
Bush came into the 2006 as one of the top 10 players for the 2007 NFL Draft. His 2006 season had started very successfully. His first carry of the season was a 48-yard run for a touchdown in the Cardinals' annual rivalry game with Kentucky. He then scored two more touchdowns in the first half, and had carried for 128 yards by the time he was injured. In the opening moments of the third quarter, Bush was tackled during a routine rushing play by Kentucky linebacker Wesley Woodyard, and suffered a broken right tibia break, which caused him to miss the remainder of the 2006 season.[4] The injury required the insertion of a steel rod and a second operation to facilitate the healing process.[5]
Bush participated in 3 bowl games during his career as a Cardinal. The first game was a GMAC Bowl loss to Miami University (Ohio) in which bush ran for 33 yard on 9 attempts behind Lionel Gates 12 carry 128 yard performance.[6] Bush would do better in the Liberty Bowl victory over Boise State with 12 carries for 96 yards, thus being his best performance in a college bowl game. However, Bush played in one last Bowl game. The Gator Bowl in which Bush ran for 94 yards on 16 carries.[6]
